American Majority-Trained Students Make Significant Impact in Spring Elections
April 16, 2013
In the 2012 presidential election, Mitt Romney had an abysmal showing among young voters and only one in three college aged students voted for him. With the sting of defeat still lingering, American Majority has doubled down and refocused its efforts to emphasize reaching the youth generation through its campus training program, Campus Majority, in the battleground state of Wisconsin.
Campus Majority is designed specifically to equip and empower students on their campuses and in their communities. Today’s students understand the importance of social media and how to connect with their generation better than anyone else, making them uniquely positioned to influence their peers. Campus Majority’s goal is to ensure that conservative students are prepared with the knowledge of how to get involved on campus, make a difference on campaigns, and utilize social media effectively to lead their generation.
In 2013, American Majority-Wisconsin has trained on numerous Wisconsin college campuses including: Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) in Mequon, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), Wisconsin Lutheran College in Wauwatosa, Carroll University in Waukesha, University of Wisconsin- Madison, Marquette University, and University of Wisconsin- La Crosse. In total, the Wisconsin Campus Majority Program has trained 274 students since its inception.
Our trainings have inspired and empowered different student organizations to get involved and make a difference on their campuses and surrounding communities, like the CUW College Republicans group. Since the creation of their group in 2010, they have struggled with having an influential voice on campus. After the Campus Majority training on campus in February, their group learned the essential skills to be effective. Their President, Jason Schneider, made it his goal to be a voice for conservative students on campus by hosting candidate forums and having meet and greets open to students and the community. When a recall signing judge backed out of a debate they were hosting, they created headlines that helped to ultimately unseat the liberal judge, who was an 18 year incumbent, in the April 2 election.
Another group that has benefited greatly from our Campus Majority trainings has been the UWM College Republicans. Two students who attended our training at UWM, Jory Deloach and Nick Glad, immediately got involved in the spring election cycle. Jory served as the Field Director for the winning Joe Voiland Campaign. He was responsible for coordinating materials and volunteers. Joe says, “American Majority is great for learning about organizing volunteers and support for a candidate. A campaign really comes down to people and AM provides the skills necessary to utilize people effectively.” Nick helped with the Get Out The Vote efforts for the the Voiland race by knocking on doors in Ozaukee County.
To see what students are saying about the trainings, follow our Campus Majority Storify, “WiRising” which has Tweets and Facebook posts from students during our trainings. In the coming months, Campus Majority will be expanding across the state and traveling many other campuses. We believe a conservative message can influence college students and we are committed to empowering conservative students to deliver that message to their peers.
