Volunteering on Local Campaigns: Why You Should

June 22, 2010

Convincing individuals to give up a presumably warm summer Minnesota day (to my friends outside of Minnesota, it does get warm here) and instead stay in-doors can be a rather daunting challenge no matter what the topic or perhaps even what you may be giving away.   Now, considering the topic is narrow in scope, specifically campaigning for local office, the interest level for most probably doesn’t even register.  Who cares, right?

Well, I’m certainly not naïve and understand that most Minnesotans haven’t put much thought into local races, outside of the candidates who are running themselves, but let me put it to you another way then.

How many of you are satisfied with the way that your elected officials are running your school district, city, county or state?  Are your taxpayer dollars being put to good use?  Are the current elected officials being held accountable for the decisions that they make with your dollars?  Have they produced the results they promised?

If you have actually taken the time to ask yourself these questions already, great, but I would argue that most haven’t.  In fact, I’d venture to guess that the vast majority of Minnesotans, if they would take a minute or two and ask themselves these simple questions, would not be overwhelmingly satisfied with the way in which their local governments have operated.

But you ask, so what can I do?  Well, for starters have you looked at the list of quality conservative candidates that are running for these local offices in your community?  I bet that most would likely be able to identify with someone who is running for office and who shares similar conservative viewpoints of less government intervention and dismisses the ideology that throwing more money at the problem won’t make it go away.

The next step, well that’s the easiest, get involved and volunteer!  Never been actually engaged in a local campaign, don’t know exactly what to do?   No problem, American Majority is here to assist you.  Visit us at www.americanmajority.org and most importantly attend our upcoming Candidate and Activist Training in Maple Grove this Saturday, June 26.

American Majority will provide you with the knowledge and resources that you will need to become effective volunteers for local candidates in your community.  Sure, volunteering does take time and this is certainly a valuable commodity for all Minnesotans in the summer months.  However, the price tag associated with inaction this summer could be alarmingly come this November if we don’t take advantage of opportunities presented before us now.  Who knows, it might even rain on Saturday…
