The world of hashtags constantly evolves, but the effective spreading of your message on Twitter requires that you use the hashtags your audience currently uses. Hashtags are important for communicating your message because hashtags categorize your tweet with other tweets having the same hashtag.

Anyone searching for a hashtag can see your tweet regardless of whether they follow you.

Effective hashtags, then, are crucial for your voice to be heard beyond your followers. How can one stay informed about the ever-changing world of effective hashtags? One helpful tool to keep you informed about effective hashtags is RiteTag.

RiteTag is a hashtag analytics program which tracks which hashtags get results across Twitter or, if you audit your Twitter account, for you specifically. In addition on the tweet composer page, RiteTag offers a search bar with which you can search for a word and see which hashtags are associated with a particular topic.

These search results are color-coded for their effectiveness. For example, searching for the word “conservative,” revealed that tweets with “conservative” could be paired with these hashtags:

Top Conservative Hashtags

#ccot (Christian Conservatives on Twitter)
#tcot (Top Conservatives on Twitter)
#tlot (Top Libertarians on Twitter)
#pjnet (Patriot Journalist Network—a team Tweet app)
#teaparty
#lnyhbt (Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled)
#waar (We are American Refuges-we want our country back)
#wiright (Good for conservatives in Wisconsin)

You should know about one more feature of RiteTag. RiteTag offers extensions for the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browser and is developing one for Mac’s Safari. This extension streamlines using RiteTag in two ways. First, the extension integrates Ritetag’s hashtag analytics capability right into your Twitter.com homepage. As such, you can continue tweeting from your account on Twitter.com and still get RiteTag’s hashtag analysis without going to RiteTag’s website.

The second features allows you to tweet from any website. Simply click the pink tag in the upper-right corner of your browser if you’re using Chrome and RiteTag will open a Compose Tweet menu with the website’s URL you are visiting already preloaded. Make a few comments, hashtag the post with RiteTag’s recommended hashtags, and you will be well on your way to reaching effectively your audience with your message.
