Student Re-Inspires Conservative College Classmates in Wisconsin

Josh Schubring Re-Inspires Conservative College Classmates in Wisconsin
May 27, 2016

Ripon, Wisconsin has been a long-time fixture of conservatism, but from college junior Josh Schubring’s experience he would tell you times are much different on the Ripon College campus. He serves as the Communications & Media chair of the newly formed Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) Chapter on campus and is in charge of presenting the group’s written content, digital media, social media, and campaigns in a strategic and positive manner.

The Ripon YAF chapter sought to gain Student Senate approval to become a campus club and was hit with a large deal of campus resistance. “Liberal groups on campus tried to frame YAF as a hate group,” Josh said.

The group finally formed. “Once the club was approved I stepped in to help clear YAF’s name and establish a clear message what YAF at Ripon stands for. I felt my skills as an intern in the marketing office at the college would be a strong tool for this group.”

Their fight on campus has brought conservative students out of the woodwork. Josh says the main challenge the group has faced since being approved on campus is “motivating conservatives who lost the spirit to fight.”

Josh has worked to re-inspire conservative minds on campus. In his upcoming years, Josh and his group members will work to inform single-issue voters as well as “bring conservative speakers that challenge the liberal perspective preached on campus.”

The YAF group brought in the American Majority team, April 24th of this year, to better equip its members:

“As the media chair, seeing how American Majority recommends running social media was fantastic,” Josh said. “We as a group got a lot of great ideas on how to put fresh new activities together as well as advice and connections to other local conservative groups.”

Josh understands that it is not going to be an easy road as a conservative on campus and that to thrive, conservative students need groups on campus and the tools to grow. His advice to conservative students:

“You’re not wrong! You need to find resources and literature to back your thought. Your conservative group on campus is a great start. American Majority can help revitalize a stagnant group as well! I recommend listening and understanding the other side, as well as educating others on yours.”
