Twitter turns 10 today! Social media has changed dramatically over the past decade and consequently you must keep up on the latest ways to make the most of Twitter as a conservative. In celebration of a favorite social network among the American Majority team, here are 10 of our favorite Twitter tips:

  • Your Twitter bio must be real and reflect your personality – not just your political views and platforms. This is your chance to engage potential voters and tell YOUR story.
  • Clue into Twitter hashtags. Read the full post on conservative popular conservative hashtags.
  • Determine who you’re trying to reach. Is it millennials? Your peers? Journalists? Always keep this in mind when Tweeting.
  • Use graphics in your Tweets! You’re 5x more likely to engage people than just text alone. (Make quick and free graphics with canva.com)
  • Keep Tweets to the point. It can be hard to communicate your idea in 140 characters, but fitting a full thought in a Tweet will dramatically increase the interest of your audience (nobody want to click through multiple links to get your point). Longer ideas? They belong on Facebook or your blog.
  • Mix in some “for fun” Tweets. Nobody likes to listen to floods of political commentary: by adding some humor or entertainment into your Twitter stream, you are more likely to grow and retain your audience…. and have fun yourself!
  • Keep up with people involved in your area of interest. By following like-minded individuals or experts in your field, you can help spread your chosen message more easily when “backed” nationally respected voices. Find people who Tweet about the same topics through free tools such as manageflitter.com.
  • Be tactful when deciding when you post Tweets. What does this mean? Unless the Tweet is time-sensitive or based on a #livetweet event, it is usually not a good idea to send a Tweet every two minutes as people will “relegate” you to a list… and then never check it. Spread out your Tweets throughout the day.
  • Avoid “toxic” Tweets. You’ve seen them: embarrassing or “questionable” Tweets that provoke a firestorm of criticism. If you see a Tweet, even if you personally like it, that might fall into one of those categories DON’T LIKE OR RETWEET IT! They will cause nothing but trouble for you and can derail your efforts to be an esteemed Twitter user.
