On the Ground in Wisconsin

The Historic 2011 Wisconsin Recall Elections are over, and the conservatives have withstood an assault from labor unions to maintain a 17-16 majority in the state senate. American Majority was busy preparing the Tea Party and other conservatives for these historic recall elections through training in or near all of the Senate recall districts in April and May. These grassroots individuals really made the difference in responding to the $25 million the Left spent attempting to buy control of the state senate and derail Gov. Scott Walker’s agenda. Moreover, local Tea Party leaders led the recall efforts of two state senators who fled to Illinois to avoid a vote on the Budget Repair bill.

While these two incumbents won re-election last night, the Tea Party told their elected officials loudly and clearly that they will be held accountable and must listen to their constituents. The two challengers were trained by American Majority and successfully knocked off establishment candidates in their primaries before taking the incumbents to the wire last night and rocking the status quo. Another key component of protecting the WI Senate Majority was the work of Media Trackers, which has exposed the Left and the unions over the past 6 months. Media Trackers changed the debate in the final week of the campaign in the “Crown Jewel” senate district by breaking the story on “BBQ For Votes” Bribery. They put a liberal candidate on defense in the final week, and even the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel called them a “Winner” of the recall elections.

State of the Unions

I still remember the smell of that locker room.

Every summer during college, I worked at a plant on an industrial island in the Mississippi River. Corn syrup (the fructose in our soft drinks) was the main product, although we also loaded some impressively big barges with some sort of cattle feed.

Hours were long, days were hot (try working under a giant dryer turbine in July), and we all wore long-sleeves and jeans, plus steel-toed boots and hard hats. And were thrilled to do it.

The college program was a great deal and we knew it. A kid couldn’t make that kind of hourly wage, not anywhere. That’s why we jumped at every chance to work more: 12-hour days, seven days a week. They literally had to make us go home. We were disgusting, ripe messes by the time we got there, but we were happy.

And that was before that first paycheck came. I tore it open in the men’s locker room and couldn’t believe my eyes. It was more money than I’d ever earned in my life. I was grinning like the guy on that Enzyte commercial.

Unfortunately for me, a union employee saw the whole thing. He asked me what I was smiling about, and as only an idiot 19-year-old can, I told him. Bad move.

The next day, our supervisor brought us the news: the union foreman had gotten wind of how much the college kids were making, and from now on, overtime was gone. This in spite of not one single full-time (unionized) employee ever wanting to work more than a “straight eight”.

That was my first experience with unions. They didn’t seem right back then, and they don’t seem right these days. Oh, I know they put into place some needed protections (and things like weekends) way back when, but there had to be a reason even my grandparents and their co-workers at the sewing machine factory wouldn’t have them in their workplace by the 1940s.

Fast-forward to now. We look across the nation’s landscape and see states (if you can even call it one anymore) like California. Once the capitalist miracle of both America and the Pacific Rim, the eighth-largest economy on the planet is now more akin to that of a third-world country. It’s tens of billions of dollars in debt. And owned lock, stock and barrel by Service Employees International Union (SEIU)—the mother of all public (read: government) employee unions.

Move to the Midwest and it’s no better:  the United Auto Workers (UAW) union finally killed the goose that laid the golden eggs in Michigan, and now I guess we’re all part-owners of lovely downtown Detroit, courtesy of those federal government bailouts.

Right next door is ground zero. Wisconsin. Whether it’s the governor’s Budget Repair Bill that finally brought teachers’ unions to task or the average state taxpayer reconsidering public employee unions’ right to collectively bargain in the first place (a “right” that FDR, Samuel Gompers and George Meany—presidents of the U.S., AFL and CIO, respectively—were against, by the way), the state capital of Madison has been white-hot all winter with scheduled votes, a dereliction of duty by Democrat lawmakers, pro-union protests, and anti-union counter-protests.

Three special elections later (failed recalls of a state Supreme Court Justice and Republican legislators—with a recall for Governor Walker still yet in the works), the unions’ back has been broken. Tens upon tens of millions of dollars—much of it from out of state—plus floods of volunteers from nationwide affiliates have all seen their efforts wasted. The country is finally waking up to the fact that a transfusion of socialism into the body politic is simply bad medicine.

Americans just want to work. They understand more government (and more government employee unions along with it) just doesn’t cut it. And they vote with their feet:  moving across the country to get to states and places like Virginia. Texas. Tennessee. Right-to-Work states led by business-friendly elected officials. States that have free markets, and low (or no!) taxes. And jobs. Lots of jobs. Not to mention that certain air they have about them.

That air with the smell of freedom in it.

Who’s Really Disenfranchised?

Disenfranchised. The very word evokes strong reactions in us: we peer back through American history, thinking of young people, minorities, suffragettes, and even slaves. None of which, at one time or another, had the right to directly participate in our system of self-government.  Heck, the Founding Fathers intentionally didn’t give the vote originally to anybody who wasn’t a white, land-owning male (though I’m guessing “powdered-wig-wearing” might have been a negotiable category).

And because of the power of this one word (and the sins of our forefathers), we are doomed to hear it each and every election cycle from now until the end of the republic (yes, my Star Wars-loving self just spazzed out as I wrote that last part). We see it on TV, we hear it in what passes for political debate. Leftists of all stripes invoke it, endlessly demagogue it and never, ever let any of us forget that there are disenfranchised among us (they’re kind of like that kid in The Sixth Sense: “I see dead people!)

Only now these downtrodden (note to self: be sure to trod someone down very soon) have somehow expanded to include not only all the usual suspects listed above, but also such groups as illegal aliens, who I suppose by the Left’s tortured logic somehow just had to be on the Framers’ white-male-lovin’ minds during that stuffy summer stretch of weeks in Philadelphia 235 years ago.

Ah, liberal guilt. It’s the Holy Grail of Leftists and Statists everywhere, the cup from which all social programs flow, magically and perpetually replenishing itself, and serving as the rationalization for all sorts of stupid things we as a country end up doing that have absolutely zero basis in reason. If you could somehow capture its energy, it’d be the ultimate Green Jobs program.

Does anybody else have what they call compassion fatigue here yet?

Meanwhile, back in the real world, 80 million ordinary citizens take the one extraordinarily conventional step every single day that makes the U.S. economic engine actually run. They go to work. Monday through Friday, and even sometimes on Saturdays.

They’ve been labeled the Silent Majority by Nixon (and ‘masses leading lives of quiet desperation’ before him by Thoreau), the middle class, the consumer class, the bourgeoisie. And yet their unfailing habit of playing by the rules, putting in overtime to put food on the table and pay their taxes has created the financial wonder of the modern world: the American economy.

This is to say nothing of those millions of mom-and-pop proprietors, the legal immigrant shopkeepers, those entrepreneurs who take the biggest financial and personal gambles and start their own small businesses. I’ll never forget the story from a friend in the Korean community who had to have his wedding reception first, prior to the ceremony that weekend, so the bulk of his guests could return to their dry cleaning businesses, their small corner markets, their stores.

Which brings us back to the whole concept of disenfranchisement. Just how much injustice is there still out there—much less every time the polls open? I mean, we’ve extended the right to vote and have your voice heard to pretty much every demographic group possible, and voter turnout still clocked in at right about sixty percent of the registered electorate (and that was considered high!). Barring (get it?) those illegal aliens, there simply aren’t any blocs of people remaining out there who aren’t allowed to pull a lever on Election Day.

Yet we have to hear these “dog-whistle”-type stories continually via the dying Leftist-run media: comparisons between having to show a government I.D. and Jim Crow laws; having to simply sign and attest to the fact that you are who you say you are somehow becoming the equivalent, I suppose, of literacy tests once administered to Reconstruction-era blacks.  As George Orwell said, control the language and you control the debate.

So we see the constant narrative of large numbers of people (poor people, brown people, black people, ‘undocumented’ people, you fill in the blank) being disenfranchised discussed obsessively every couple of years. This particular conceit happens to fit particularly well with the already-existing idea that all conservatives are racists. Rinse, repeat.

But if I can be so heretical and bold—who are the truly disenfranchised within our existing political system?

Beyond these calculated, cynical sideshows thrown up by the Left to make middle America uncomfortable with its past for immediate electoral/partisan gain, who is being taken advantage of here? It’s not ethnic groups, most of whom are represented coalitions, and part and parcel of urban political machines today. And it’s not the corrupt, crony capitalist class, who no matter what outrageous item on the menu they order, never have to pay the bill.

You know who does?

You do.

You’re part of that grand American tradition of holding up your end of the bargain. You’re that proud parent who works extra hours to give your child the best education available. You’re that citizen who foots ever-increasing taxes on everything from the car you drive to the property you “own”.

All the while believing that the men and women you send to your city council, your county board or commission, your state capital, or even Washington, D.C. are actually going to do what they said they would do. Then you watch and listen, year after year—it seems helplessly—as your voice gets drowned out by the chorus of shouts and cries…always for more spending, more government programs.

And on your dime.

Call me crazy but I’d say that’s the textbook definition of disenfranchised.

No More “Boone-Doggles”

I’m tired of “business as usual” in Washington, D.C. I know a lot of you are as well. It is this reaction to the status quo that gave rise to the tea party movement.

In spite of the 2010 election results, we see a lot of Republicans continuing to act as if they owed nothing to the tea party movement. How do I know this? By looking at bills like HR 1380, the Natural Gas Act, and seeing over 80 Republicans, many of whom you helped get elected, signed on as co-sponsors.

For those of you unfamiliar with the bill, I want to recommend our sister organization, American Majority Action’s, memo on the bill and the inherent flaws found in it. I also penned an op-ed for the Washington Times recently on the subject, found here.

Let me be honest. I am all for ending our dependence on foreign oil and for getting out of the Middle East. I am all for exploring our domestic natural resources so that we can be energy independent.

What I am not for is Washington, DC attempting to manipulate the free market and creating an artificial demand for something like natural gas when there is no demand for it. I am also against crony capitalists like T. Boone Pickens who look to Washington, DC to further burden the American taxpayer with billions of dollars of credits and subsidies to create this artificial demand. Who absorbs all the risk in this scenario? You and me, the American taxpayer. Who gets all the reward and earns all the profit? T. Boone Pickens.

It is rare that American Majority engages in issues like this one, but this one is so important I could not pass on the opportunity to inform you about it. Will you join with me in holding Republicans in Washington, DC accountable? If your member is on this list of co-sponsors, will you call them today and ask them to get off HR 1380, the Natural Gas Bill, as a co-sponsor?

Tell them you are tired of Washington, DC trying to manipulate the free market.

Tell them you are tired of business as usual. It’s time for change.
