What Are You Doing For Liberty?

Parties are great. Protests raise awareness. If that’s where our efforts stop then our country will remain on it’s current trajectory.

American Majority is training patriots, activists and candidates, to make a difference in politics. We’re moving beyond the Tea Parties to implementing freedom.

That’s the short story of how the Post Party Summits got their name.

In the last two weeks we’ve held Post Party Summits in Pittsburg, Denver and Jacksonville. Hundreds of patriots have come and trained with American Majority, The Hancock Committee For The States, RedState.com and Smart Girl Politics. They left equipped with the tools they need to make a difference in their communities and states. The left energized and ready for the political battle ahead.

This weekend there will be Post Party Summits in Charlotte, NC and Kansas City, MO. We’ll also be in Indianapolis, IN on May 14-15. If you’re a patriot and want to see a difference in the direction of this country then you need to come and join us.

The Summits are inexpensive and packed with information and world class training. You don’t have to take my word for it though…

What It Takes: Leaders for a New American Revolution

American Majority exists to identify and train leaders- we do this at the college level with our Campus Majority program, throughout the nation with our Activists Training, and on an on-going basis with our Candidate Trainings.  Very often I talk with an individual who doesn’t consider themselves a leader or is reluctant to step up to the next level.  These times we live in present a unique opportunity- I truly believe that we have the opportunity to shape a new American revolution if we have the courage to do so.  We need strong leaders in each of our communities, running for local offices like county commission, helping others in the community become more engaged in the tea party of 912 group.  So what makes a good leader?

1. Leaders look ahead. American Majority trains up today’s leaders through our candidate trainings, but we also focus on tomorrow- the local leaders within the communities and colleges.  A “farm team” approach ensures that when one leader steps down or away from the battle, another will be on the bench, waiting and capable to step up.  This same philosophy would serve one well as a group leader or even as an elected official- are you looking towards the future to where you want your organization to be?  Are you preparing for the long-term as well as the here and now?  Noah Webster created the first dictionary to ensure that future generations would know their country’s heritage- “As soon as [a child] opens his lips, he should rehearse the history of his own country.”

2. Leaders inspire. They look ahead to the future and then translate that into a vision that inspires and motivates others.  Not everyone will be the leader whose words mobilize the masses, but all of us can be leaders who feed the “better angels of our nature.”  Being passionate about the difference that we can make will help to inspire others in your group, and keep them engaged even when the occasional disappointment comes our way.  I often tell people in trainings that when I first sat down to hear about American Majority, Ned Ryun painted a vision of what our nation could look like if we were successful- and that vision was appealing to me because I saw how it could affect my own life: the private practice my parents built, the life of my little brother who wears the uniform of the United States Navy, the home my husband and I want someday to own, the future children we want to raise on safe streets, in solid schools and in a nation that is free.

3. Leaders strategize. Washington had a battle plan when he went to war; soon after the Founders signed the Declaration of Independence, they had pamphlets printed and distributed, understanding that they must persuade the minds of the people before any revolution could be fought or won.  I’ve noticed leaders of groups around the nation strategizing this year- not just the “heads” of the groups, but the individual leaders as well, forming Constitution study classes, targeting their own precincts, putting together legislative task forces within their groups.  You can’t get to your destination if you don’t know what it is, and a good strategy is the map that allows you to get there.

4. Leaders focus. It’s easy to become distracted by the many things that pull at us, or to allow the urgent to repeatedly crowd out the important.  Good leaders focus on what is important and put their efforts there first.  I once trained a woman who told me that she didn’t have time to be involved in everything, so she was only going to be involved in voter registration.  Important?  Absolutely.  In the time since I first met her at an activist training, I’ve watched as she repeatedly set aside the urgent to focus on the important, and it’s reaping results.

5. Leaders engage. They don’t use coercion or manipulation to get their way, rather they persuade others in their group or influence of the merits their proposal or idea has.  My grandmother’s favorite phrase is “A mind changed against its will is of the same opinion still”- good leaders understand the importance of engaging their members and opponents in a battle for the heart and mind, knowing that once someone comes around to their perspective voluntarily, their involvement will be stronger.

6. Leaders are real people. Rather than sitting on their high horse, they do the little things too.  They work shoulder-to-shoulder with the others in their group.  Many people have come to us after trainings to share stories of how someone set out to be a leader in their group and wanted to be above them all.  A good leader engages in the small things as well as the glamorous, and considers themselves no better than the others in the group.  The official eulogy of George Washington described him as being “First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen, he was second to none in humble and enduring scenes of private life.”

7. Leaders lead. When decisions must be made, they make them- and often in the face of threat or fear.  During the Revolution when Captain John Parker spotted British troops coming near, he told his militia at Lexington: “Don’t fire unless fired upon. But if they want a war, let it begin here.”  The ability to make a decision when others falter and question is very often what distinguishes a leader from a follower.

8. Leaders do the right thing. All of us at some point reach a fork where we could do the right thing, which is rarely easy, or we could do the wrong thing, which is rarely hard.  Leaders don’t take the short cuts and keep their actions above-the-board.  I don’t know about you, but this particular characteristic makes me think that while we have many elected officials, we have very few leaders.

9. Leaders listen. Every few months, we in the American Majority staff receive books to read and the most recent one was “The Starfish and The Spider.”  This was a fascinating book that examined the differences between early tribes and modern organizations which were hierarchical and those which were “leaderless.”  I started out reading the book with skepticism as I am a classic type-A personality who craves structure and order.  But my mind was changed as I began to understand the importance of this lesson: cut off the head of a spider and it will die.  But if you cut off a starfish’s leg, it grows a new one, and that leg alone can grow a completely new starfish.  The greatest power a leader has is in cultivating within its group the individual members’ leadership abilities.

Why only 9 qualities of leadership?  Because I know the quality of people we train and I’m guessing that each individual who reads this could add their own Number 10 quality of leadership.  Because they’re leaders.

Hone those leadership skills with our Post Party Summits- we kicked off in Pittsburgh last weekend with 250 great patriots (see what one of them had to say about the Summit here), and we’re coming to a city near you this week and the following weekend!  Check our YouTube videos to see what attendees of the Pittsburgh Summit had to say about these unique training opportunities.

Staying Involved Post-Parties and Post-Trainings

American Majority asked the question “Now What?” after the 2009 tea parties, and again following this year’s tea parties through our website AfterTheTeaParty.com.  The question often arises at trainings as well- people wonder how involved our activists remain, how our candidates fare in the elections, what our college students trained through Campus Majority go on to accomplish.

A great story from here in Kansas is a woman named Julanne.  Julanne attended one of our political activist trainings in May of last year following the April tea parties.  At the training, we discussed the fundamentals of building effective coalitions, organizing events, holding government accountable, communicating your views, and volunteering in campaigns.   I was excited to receive an email from Julanne a few weeks ago, letting me know that she was applying all those skills together in an upcoming event.

On April 24, Julanne will help to host a meeting called “Wake Up America” with local speakers from grassroots and tea party groups and both current elected officials and candidates campaigning for the people’s vote in this year’s election.  Following the event, there will be a full hour of questions, networking and connecting with individuals within the community.  Individuals who attend the meeting will meet and have the opportunity to build coalitions with other liberty-minded individuals, hold government accountable by communicating with their existing elected officials, get involved in the campaigns of any candidates they may agree with, and more.

American Majority isn’t about rallies or pep talks, though both have their purpose.  We exist to train individuals like Julanne, to give people the education, tools and resources they need to go back to their own communities, and to make a difference for liberty.

We’re constantly offering Activist, Candidate and Campus trainings throughout the state and nation.  Coming up in just a few weeks are unique opportunities for advanced training with the Post Party Summits, happening in seven cities nation-wide.  Visit www.americanmajority.org/summit to find out more and to register for the one nearest you.

Tea Parties and Taking Back our Nation

It’s nearly tea party time again and lately I’ve been thinking about all the changes that the tea party movement has seen in the past year of its existence.  There’s one moment that particularly stands out in my mind.

My hometown of Salina, KS held a tea party on a grassy hill on April 15th where I saw my friend Heidi.  When I finished talking and stepped down, she was waiting for me with a question: “Can this really make a difference?”  Heidi identified at the beginning of the movement something that many individuals have yet to realize one year in- that while protesting is meaningful and rallies are important, that real change begins only when the sign-waving turns into implementing.

In the past year since the April 15th tea parties, I’ve personally met more than one thousand people who are asking the same question that Heidi asked- how do we make a difference?  People like Jeff in Pennsylvania who drove through a wall of traffic after work one Thursday night to attend an activist training that barely had him home before midnight; or like Julles in Nebraska who drove four hours on a Saturday morning to attend a grassroots organizing training, because that was the nearest one.  Both organized the tea parties in their communities; both realized they needed to do something more than protest.

So nearly one year after the tea parties first swept through the nation, I finally know the answer to Heidi’s question.  This past year has seen legislative victories through tenth amendment sovereignty resolutions that many tea party groups have championed; it’s seen national strides in the pushback, delay and moderation of health control legislation that tampers with our basic freedoms; it stunned pundits and political scholars when a candidate backed by tea party groups across the nation dared to take back the people’s seat in Massachusetts.

All that didn’t happen just because of protests and rallies, though they played a key role.  It happened because average people with jobs, families and mortgages chose to engage in the unglamorous task of taking back our nation: organizing in their community, carpooling to the state legislature, testifying in committees, writing their elected officials, and talking to their friends and neighbors about the importance of standing up for liberty.  So here’s your answer Heidi: yes, we really can make a difference.  If we choose to do the hard work, to implement the freedom we rally for, then we’ll keep looking back as we near the one-year point and know that we made a difference.  And then we’ll look ahead to 2010 and we’ll know: the best is yet to come.

What Are You Doing for Liberty?

In 1852, Wendel Phillips wrote that, “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” These words are true of any government but I believe they are a special reminder in our republic.

For many years (exactly how long is a question for another day), a significant majority of our country, and conservatives specifically, have been asleep at the wheel. We have not been vigilant and the result has been a progressive resurgence resulting in a contraction of our liberty.

In America it seems that we have a very short attention span. After all, if a deliberate, enemy attack on one of our largest cities couldn’t keep our attention for more than a few years, so how can we hope that the spectre of progressivism will be a winning issue at the ballot box?

I’ve heard a lot of talk over the last few months with people asking whether our current situation is a tipping point which will lead to America’s finest hour or an inevitable end to the great experiment our founders undertook. For myself, I believe that this question is yet to be answered. Unchecked, the progressive forces now in play will move forward with their end goal of fundamentally changing the purpose of our government. However, with the right organization and training it is possible for the conservative American majority to make a decisive stand on the principles which have made our nation great.

At American Majority we understand the realities of elections and realize that it is the people who win those elections that are going to make public policy. If we want to have a hand in those decisions then we must start winning. The trainings that we conduct across the country work toward outfitting conservatives so that they can maximize their impact on the electoral process.

Later this month we are going to host a series of Post Party Summits, designed to empower and equip conservatives as we move into the heat of this year’s election cycle. These gatherings are going to be held in seven states over a three week period of time. Below is a map of the Post Party Summit locations and you can find more information by visiting the official Post Party website.

The End of the Beginning

In two weeks the Tax Day TEA Parties will celebrate their one-year anniversary. As we prepare to celebrate that day and how far our conservative insurgency has come, I believe it’s critical to remember where we are in this struggle.
In the past year we have won major victories and experienced stinging defeats. We have proven our ability to protest and stand up against the baseless ad hominem attacks which the left has hurled at us. Politicians have become keenly aware of our willingness to stand up to them and call them out for their misrepresentation of their constituents. However, regardless of the victories or defeats we have seen in the past year, this battle is nowhere near over.
In the words of Winston Churchill, “This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” There is much yet for us to do. As the primary election season continues on we are being seen as an increasingly powerful force.
In his Wall Street Journal Opinion column this morning, Daniel Henninger wrote:
The tea party movement is getting the most attention because it is the most vulnerable to the standard tool kit of mockery and ridicule. It is more difficult to mock the legitimacy of Scott Brown’s overthrow of the Kennedy legacy, the election results in Virginia and New Jersey, an economic discomfort that is both generalized and specific to the disintegration of state and federal fiscs, and indeed the array of state attorneys general who filed a constitutional complaint against the new health-care law. What’s going on may be getting past the reach of mere mockery.
In order to continue our movement from punchline to powerhouse we must prove our power through influencing primary and general elections and it is critical that we begin raising up true conservative statesmen from our ranks.
Ultimately, that is why American Majority exists. Our goal is to identify and empower ordinary conservative citizens to run for political office and maximize their impact on the political system as a whole.
If you haven’t yet attended an American Majority training you need to. Our political trainings are designed to take patriots of all knowledge levels and educate them on the most effective means for them to champion limited government and individual liberty.
Check out the Post Party Summits that we are hosting, in concert with RedState, Smart Girl Politics and the Hancock Committee for the States. They will be great opportunities to come together with hundreds of fellow patriots and learn how we are going to take back this country.

Health Care and Getting Engaged Locally

I grew up wanting to be a doctor just like my dad.  My science scores soon put that dream to rest and I chose politics as a second calling, but for about five years, I worked at his office.  My dad has practiced for 25 years in a Kansas town of about 600 with no traffic lights and some of the best people you could hope to know.  So it should come as no surprise that when Congress passed the monstrous health control legislation Sunday, it started my week on a sour note. The legislation increases costs and government interference with private practices like my dad’s, levies higher taxes on businesses that employ our friends and neighbors, and takes away the individual freedom to choose one’s own health care.

This week has seen many impassioned debates about the legislation around the nation- yet here in Kansas, we debated the same issue with much less publicity.  SCR 5032 was defeated twice this week in our Kansas legislature.  The bill would have placed a constitutional amendment on the ballot for the people’s vote on whether to reject the restrictions the national government put upon our liberties through the health control bill.  Some of the local tea party groups sent ambassadors to talk with their state legislators about the bill; yet, not surprisingly, local and state media offered little coverage of the legislation, and many citizens didn’t even know that the bill was being considered.

We at American Majority often say that change begins at the state and local level, and we encourage individuals to work for the national change they seek through their own communities.  This is a perfect example.

But we the people have another opportunity to make our voices heard- after all, November is coming and it is an election year.  Kansans can start by clicking here to find out how their legislator voted on the bill.  For a list of email addresses for each legislator, Smart Girl Politics has put together this Google database.  A government of the people, for the people, by the people depends upon the people contacting their elected representatives and holding them accountable to be responsive.  When that fails, often the best way to hold someone accountable is to get involved in their opponent’s campaign.

I’ve had a bad week.  The arrogance of a Congress who voted against the majority of Americans, despite the calls, letters and protests, was startling to see.  Founding Father Samuel Adams knew this day would come and gave firm instructions: “If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.”  This week, we face new dangers from a government which knows no bounds and threats to liberty which know no end.  Now is the time to translate that anxiety over the direction of our country, the anger towards the lack of responsive representation, and the passion for our sacred liberty into action.  Get involved today by attending a Candidate Training or Activist Training.  Learn to make the most of your time, energy and efforts at the Post Party Summits.    Game on, friends.  We have seven months until November.

Alea Iacta Est

In what is arguably one of the longest lasting and stable constitutional republics in human history, we have witnessed a markedly unstable and rather tumultuous political landscape in just a few short years.  This government evidenced by a separation of powers with checks and balances has seen fit to challenge those sacrosanct institutions in every way imaginable.  How shall we respond?

We have witnessed the rise and fall of political dynasty.  The people have endured the rigors of an impeachment of a national leader.  Elected officials have proposed the dissolution of representative democracy in favor of a purely democratic system.  Citizens have been subjected to endless partisan rancor.  Each of the three branches of government has attempted to exercise undo supremacy over the others.  The people have been subjected to multiple proposals by the legislature to grant mass unconditional citizenship to aliens.  Myriad lives and untold treasures have been spent in an unending war in the Middle East.  And one party has sought to gain hegemony over the other by a blatantly unconstitutional legislative decree.

Of course, I’m referring to the end days of the Roman republic which culminated in a bloody civil war before finally arriving at the appointment by the Senate of Julius Caesar as Dictator Perpetuum.

I took pause to ponder this history in recent days with the thought that the United States House of Representatives may very well move to upend the Constitution, which grants them their limited powers, by “deeming as passed” the largest federal entitlement program in the history of mankind.

Considerations of whither health care reform aside (because at this point they are really very moot), we have witnessed a decades-long assault on the U.S. Constitution of the sort we have learned from the proverbial frog in the pot.  And because we as a people have refused to recognize how very hot the water is, our constitutional republic is poised ultimately to boil to death on the heels of this so-called Slaughter Rule.  And after all, it is an appropriate moniker given that it threatens possibly to deliver the final death blow of what has been a deliberate slaughtering of that “venerable document” and the freedoms for which our founding fathers pledged their “lives, fortunes, and sacred honor.”

We have learned all too well that Americans’ regard for lessons in history goes back as far as yesterday’s lunch.  Nevertheless, we stand watch on the precipice in hopes that this great republic will not go the way of the last one.  And in that spirit we ready ourselves with a sobering recollection of those immortalized words:

“Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”

Whether the “deem as passed” scheme is executed, that we have witnessed its serious consideration warrants another revolution.  Not of munitions and soldiers, we are now duty-bound to return to a government by consent of the governed, and in this revolution November is our battlefield and the ballot our weapon.  To that end, the Post Party movement marches onward, adding to its ranks every day.
