American Majority will be coming to Coral Springs, Florida on April 29th and 30th, for a training event that is geared toward helping people across Florida take their defense of liberty and fight for limited government to the next level. The event will be held at the Coral Springs Christian Academy, 2550 Riverside Drive, in Coral Springs.

Friday evening, from 6:00pm-10:00pm, the topics covered will show community activists how to take their use of new media tools to the next level, and how to increase voter involvement and election integrity.

I’m Talking About Glenn Beck Again

This time he’s taking on Google, and this is sure to be a battle of epic proportions.

In this clip found on NBC Bay Area’s website (more on this less-than-professional news outlet in a moment), Beck questions the ties of the internet giant and says that he will most likely not be using Google anymore.

Now, briefly, I’d like to point out that, contrary to the article’s title, Beck does not “urge a Google boycott.” In fact, he emphatically says the opposite. He states that he personally will not be using it, but that he is not trying to lead a boycott. Second, look at the picture of Beck posted at the top of the article. I’m not sure if it’s the NBC affiliated status, the San Francisco location, or both, but something tells me these guys don’t like Glenn Beck very much.

Now, about Google.

Beck explains that, for several reasons, he is “uncomfortable” with Google because of its involvement in the recent Egyptian revolution, its coziness with the U.S. government, and its donations to some left-wing organizations. His discomfort is warranted.

Last year, Google donated $145 million to charity, some of these donations to left-wing non profit groups. However, as found here, Google has a policy of matching the charitable gifts of its employees up to $12,000, meaning that plenty of non-left-wing groups received Google money as well. As Beck mentions, Google has partnered with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, an agency that exists to provide satellite images to government intelligence services. This could be good for national security given the sophistication of Google Earth, but it is also a bit disconcerting.

But all things considered, the bigger question is: what should we do about it? Even Beck says,

I’m not sure if I want my search engine involved in government overthrows, good or bad. What I want from a search engine is good search results.

Like Beck, I would prefer that my search engine not be involved in revolutions. But the sticky part of this situation is that Google is the undisputed king of good search results. It is the single most visited site on the internet with over three billion hits per day. Statistically, over 95 percent of you found the American Majority website for the first time through Google.

Moreover, American Majority recognizes the importance of using Google to your advantage as a conservative activist, even though Google and its executives have shown themselves to be liberal more often than not. When we speak of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), we are really talking about what we call “Google Juice,” your ability to appear high on a list of Google Search results. SEO is crucial in creating your online presence as a candidate or activist, and Google is virtually the only search engine worth focusing on.

So, being that Glenn Beck influences so many people, what do we do now? Is Google worth worrying about, or will we go on using it because it is the biggest and best? I don’t know about you, but I have to think for a few seconds to even come up with the name of an alternative search engine to Google. Can we even make a dent? Should we even try?

Election Themed Online Activism

Can you believe how quickly election day is approaching? It creeps up, and before you know it, the big day is here! However as activists, I know you’re prepared. I’m sure you’ve been phone banking, block walking, and doing everything you can to help get out the vote for conservative candidates in your area. If you haven’t, what are you waiting for?! Get in touch with American Majority Action to help out in your neighborhood!

While there’s nothing like a face-to-face interaction with voters, sometimes not everyone can be reached. Supplementary reinforcements that help spread the word about a candidate or cause, such as online activism, have become increasingly important in today’s fast-paced, digital world.

With election day less than 20 days away, I want to share a few tips detailing how you can maximize your online GOTV efforts for conservative candidates of your choosing; specifically through the unique, indispensably important mediums of Twitter and Facebook.

Twitter

Finding out if a candidate you support has a twitter account, then tweeting about a them using “@username” is a great way to help spread the word, gain the candidate more followers, and create a buzz about the race. When you put the @ sign before the username of a candidate, not only will they see you tweeting about them, but your tweet links directly to their account so others can follow the candidate as well. When mentioning a candidate in a tweet, it’s great to link to a positive story on them, an issue relating to the campaign, or an article that highlights the negative positions of their opponent. If you do mention the name of the candidate’s opponent, I suggest not linking to the opponent’s twitter account with the @, because you aren’t looking to get more exposure for the candidates you oppose. The last thing we’d want to do is link to a twitter feed where a big government candidate is presenting him or herself in a positive light. It’s your job as an online activist to highlight the positive positions of  liberty candidates; and do the opposite when it comes to their opponents. In addition to tweeting with the candidate’s @username, it’s a great idea to add a few “hashtags” to your tweet. Hashtags are essentially twitter conversation tags that people add to the end of tweets. They begin with an #, and can be clicked on. For example, clicking #texas in a in someone’s tweet will bring you to a list of everyone tweeting with that hashtag. It’s a great way to track conversations about specific topics, and to spread information about your candidate. Others track hashtag conversations to find relevant information relating to the topic. It can’t hurt to tag your tweets with a few of the suggested ones below. As you tweet more often, you’ll notice others, as well.

Suggested hashtags for national discussions: #tcot (“Top conservatives on Twitter”) #teaparty #liberty #majority #amaction

It’s also worth looking into hashtags that are used by people locally. For example, in my former place of residence, Massachusetts, #mapoli is widely used. In my current home of Texas, #txlege is common, and #txcot is for Texas conservatives.

In addition, almost universally, a combination of a State’s abbreviation and a district are used to discuss races. For example, #MA04 (Barney Frank’s district). A similar concept applies to Senate races. For example, #DESen to discuss the O’Donell v. Coons race, or #KYSen for Paul v. Conway.

Facebook

If a candidate has a personal profile, we suggest you friend them. Sometimes a link to their profile will be listed on their website – and if not you can easily do a facebook search. Additionally, if they have a fan page, you should “like” it. Whether you’re friends with someone, or have “liked” a page, you can tag either in a status, creating a link for others to follow. For example, you could update a status saying, “Check out the @’Name of Candidate’s Page’ fan page. She’s a great candidate, because she wants to get spending under control and make sure our taxes aren’t raised”. With the @ sign before the name of her page, you’ll create a direct link for others to follow, and then “like.” Additionally, it’s helpful for you to ‘like’ the status updates of candidates you’re trying to promote, because the more ‘likes’ a status gets, the more prominently featured that update will be in other people’s newsfeeds. The amount of “likes” a status gets, among other factors, have an effect on search engine rankings as well.

Another great tactic on facebook relates to posting, and reposting links. If you see a great link on a candidate’s page or profile, you can repost it to your profile by clicking “share”, which appears just below the link, and just above the comments. Doing so will create a post on your profile which will state you got the link “via” the profile it came from, with a link to that profile. This is another great way to promote your candidate by creating a direct link to their page on your own profile. Additionally, you can post a new link to your wall, and tag a candidate’s profile or page the same way you do in a status update. Lastly, make sure you “suggest to friends” the fan pages of candidates you are supporting. On a fan page, right under the candidate’s picture, you’ll see a link that says “suggest to friends”. Click on friends that you think will support the candidate, and ask them to become a fan in order to help spread the word.
This may seem overwhelming to those who aren’t familiar with facebook and twitter – but if you’re here reading our blog, you’re off to a great start! For those already using both mediums, I hope that this serves as a good reminder, or perhaps jumpstarts you to utilize some online activism tactics that you may not have considered previously.

Happy tweeting and facebooking; but don’t forget to pair it with copious amounts of boots on the ground activism!

Seeing the Light Born of a Dark Two Years

In the middle of October, 2008, when I still had my own personal blog (never again) I predicted that Barack Obama would win the Presidential election.  Though the poll numbers were still pretty tight at that point, the writing was on the wall as far as I was concerned.  Thus I conceded a month early and wrote a post about what conservatives should do next after the November elections.

The purpose of the post (entitled “The Conservative Reaction: A Call to Action”) was to ask the question:

“What should we as Conservatives do after the election we face of an overwhelming Democratic House and Senate and a newly elected Democratic President?”

Now, two years later, I wanted to go back and see how conservatives have done.  Thus, here is what I wrote as the “Five Things I am Going to Try to do During LUPO – Life Under President Obama”.  Check them out along with my new comments underneath.

Number 1: As a conservative, Barack Obama’s election means I must stand firm in my convictions and be ready to defend my positions…

First off, I know of many folks who immediately started reading up on the free market system, the constitution, and the history of the founding fathers in order to begin educating themselves.  Additionally, conservatives have been challenged by prominent conservatives to know where they stand and why.  And overall, conservatives have started going on the offensive more and more as the country has been taken down the road to even more massive government and less individual freedom.

Because people have embraced this responsibility, it has truly been incredible to see how many folks are now openly touting their conservative beliefs and their love for liberty.  Well done, American public.

Number 2: As a conservative, Barack Obama’s election means I must be creative in how I get my message to the masses…

When I wrote this post two years ago I was really curious how this was going to play out.  But two years later, I see how conservatives are using tools like Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and conservative websites to truly spread the message of conservatism effectively and strategically.  Heck, even conservative candidates are (finally) eschewing traditional media sources and taking their message straight to the people.

It is truly amazing to know that our better ideas and principled positions are finally starting to reach the average citizen – and it is humbling to know that American Majority has been at the forefront of this movement through our trainings, outreach, and education of a new generation of concerned Americans.

Score another one for the good guys.

Number 3: As a conservative, Barack Obama’s election means I must unite with those around me who believe as I do…

The implications of this advice are obvious two years later – The Tea Party Movement.  Not only has the movement grown exponentially since the spring of 2009, but it has also become a political force in all parts of the country.  And while the MSM mocked it, misunderstood it, and tried its best to kill it, the Tea Party folks have continually gotten more and more excited about cleaning house in Washington.  Thanks for that, President Obama; in reality, we owe you big time.

Oh, and just to channel my inner Al Gore, since I wrote about the need to unite and come together about 6 months before the Tea Parties started, I will take full and complete credit for them.  Yea for me.

Number 4: As a conservative, Barack Obama’s election means I must not give into the lie that conservatism is dying…

Well, obviously this is not the case.  Even though the pundits declared a new era in politics and the death of the conservative movement, we’ll see just how dead we are on November 2.

However, as a side note, if the (hopefully) decisive election results don’t clearly state the case for the country’s desire for smaller government, less spending, more accountability, and decidedly more transparency, then maybe Chris Christie can get in someone’s face and explain it to them nice and plain-like.

Number 5: Lastly, as a conservative, Barack Obama’s election means I must embrace the hope that even though things look dark now, there is a light upon the dawn…

Ah, yes, hope.  Not a false hope or a government-built hope, but a genuine and authentic “clean-out-the-halls-of-Congress-kind-of-hope” is what I feel when I look around the country and see people working hard to change our country for the better.  It truly is a blessing to see that apathy is slowly being replaced once again by the American desire for freedom, liberty, and prosperity.

Thus, before we battle for the next 20+ days for the future of this country, take a second to enjoy the fact that the horizon is breaking forth through the morning dark.  Relish the thought that soon our anger, our disgust, and our weariness will soon be replaced by a steadfast resolve to hold a new batch of elected representatives responsible for their actions and their votes.

For it is nearing the time to go from educated and informed voter to become educated and informed constituents once again – this time with a new focus and a renewed strength to see the American Dream make its comeback.

And be sure that while our days have been dark for the past two years, the light of freedom will show itself very bright very soon.  For this reason, I am thankful and encouraged by what has transpired within this movement during the past two years and what will happen many years into the future.

Fight on, fellow Americans, fight on!

FINAL MOVE TO VICTORY : GOTV

The final stretch of a campaign encompasses countless elements that will often make or break efforts to push a candidate across the finish line: making closing arguments to potential voters, working last-minute media relations to garner positive publicity, and diligently using financial resources to squeeze the most efficiency out of every last penny are a few examples. However, a vital component – arguably the most significant to achieving victory – is the all-important Get Out The Vote, or GOTV: establishing a targeted ground game to pull last-minute support into your column on Election Day.

Campaigns traditionally go through an early period where they examine the electoral DNA that make up their district; going precinct-by-precinct and determining which ones historically vote along their party lines and which ones often go for the opposition. Targeting the swing areas, or 50/50 precincts, that could realistically go either way depending on turnout, customarily takes up a significant portion of work and time. It is here where campaigns employ micro-targeting and persuasion: learning as much as possible about voters – what issues are important and relevant to their lives – and then based on this information providing a sound and convincing argument why they should support their candidacy, persuading them to cast a ballot on their behalf. Ideally, a campaign wants to reach out to these voters at least three times whether by phone-banking or volunteers knocking on doors, the goal is to make these 50/50 precincts 49/51 or more in your favor.

As the calendar moves from summer, past Labor Day and into the fall, the final election-sprint takes place and effective campaigns carry out a targeted GOTV strategy. This is a period of days, maybe a week at the most, before Election Day, when you direct efforts to pull voters in precincts that traditionally support your type of candidacy or political party; here is when you direct attention to precincts that are closer to 70/30 in your favor and not so much towards swing areas, this is the time to push, pull, and drag voters to the polls and make sure your supporters are represented on Election Day.

A fundamental flaw for many campaigns that come up short and are unable to win has been the failure to reach out to these traditionally strong areas of support in the final stages of an election. An effective GOTV effort can sway results by four to six percentage points and is often the key to victory. Many voters, especially in off-year elections, need that final push and personal contact to remind them to turn out in November.

Election Day is looming closer and closer. Campaigns that have specific and detailed plans to devote the final days to a GOTV ground game in areas of traditional support have a much better chance for realizing victory, while those that fail to implement this strategy risk falling short and facing ultimate defeat.

The Repeal Pledge

Independent Women’s Voice and American Majority Action are combining forces on The Repeal Pledge, which is calling for the de-authorization, defunding and repealing of ObamaCare. The hope is to get as many incumbents and candidates to sign the pledge to get them on the record. Rush Limbaugh has begun talking up the pledge, saying that ObamaCare must be repealed, and you can see the clip of Rush talking about it here at American Majority Action’s site. The Wall Street Journal wrote an editorial about it on Monday, and the entire editorial is here.  Now people will say that pledges are meaningless, they accomplish nothing. But that’s if they don’t have any muscle behind them to enforce the pledge. I have a feeling that there will be some real “muscle” behind this pledge, and once incumbents and candidates are on the record, they can be, and will be, held accountable. I would strongly encourage those reading to sign the pledge themselves, but also to get the incumbents and candidates in their districts to sign it as well. There are specific pledges for both incumbents and candidates, with the incumbent one being here, and the candidate one here. I believe that ObamaCare is, and should be, a major campaign issue this fall, so get ahold of the candidates in your area today and get them to sign the pledge.

The Fallacy of Changing Something Great
