Vote Local

We always hear of the benefits, virtues, and civic duty (both economic and social) related to supporting our local community through patronage of local business: “Buy Local”.  I have no problem with that.  I support local business as much as the next guy, but what I don’t completely understand is why this principle of local responsibility does not translate to political participation: “Vote Local”.

Previously I had posted on the importance of winning locally and how political involvement and success at the local level directly translates to extended success at the state and national level.   Today’s post is devolution of this concept: to win locally, you must first vote locally.

Early voting has begun for the May 8th municipal elections in the vast majority of the towns and cities across Texas.  These elections represent the most direct and consequential control we have over the instruments of government that are closest to us.  Unfortunately, statistically speaking the results of these elections have traditionally been the least representative (or at best ambiguously indicative) of the people’s will simply due to woefully low voter turnout numbers.  Voter turnout in Travis County, Texas in last year’s local elections hovered at around 6% with several races and propositions being decided by 15 votes or less.
Mind you, that’s of registered voters.  Seriously think about that… theoretically it could break down like this:  In a community of 25k eligible voters where 75% of them are registered to vote and only 6% of those registered turn out to vote in their local election, only 1,125 citizens are actually participating in the process of selecting who will be making important local decisions on behalf of the entire community of over 25,000 people.

If you’re really looking to make a direct political impact in your community, educate yourself on the local issues and candidates and vote in your local election!  Relatively speaking, your vote as part of the 6% or 7% participating in a local election has far greater proportional impact than in a statewide or national election.  Additionally, by wielding your local vote, you exercise far more control over your immediate environment than you do by, say, voting for Congress… and for the most part, local elections occur every year allowing for a increasingly malleable political landscape.

Imagine if commonsense conservatives decided to take ownership of their local elections.  Encouraging good candidates to run for school board and city council, helping them campaign, and then turned out in mass to get them elected… How much of your tax dollars would be saved or spent more wisely?  How many useless ordinances would not come into existence?  How long would it be till this tradition of conservative values found its way to the State House… to Washington?

Bottom line:  Vote Local

For a Limited Time Only: Getting While They Can

Local and state governments are scrambling to get their “share” of tax payer money while the getting still seems possible.
Here in Arkansas  local school districts are seeking millage increases, city councils are proposing local A & P Taxes (Advertising  & Tourism Promotion tax) and municipalities are requesting sales tax boosts to build sports complexes; taxpayers are now being bombed with a steady rain of requests to shell out more “for the greater good” in different areas of our state.
My belief is that local and state governments are well aware of the tax tsunami building on the federal level and want to make sure they get their portion while it’s even remotely possible.
Imagine your own paycheck. Now visualize another nickel removed here, and another dime taken there, each and every month being siphoned away. Talk about being nickled and dimed to death. Arkansas is already one of the most heavily taxed states in the union. Every man woman and child breathing in our state today owes $4,305 in state and local debt alone. Not to mention the fact Arkansas is 12th among states growing in its debt. Which means for Arkansans our “tax free day” is not May 31st like some
would have you believe but it is actually July 29th, more than half way through the year!

Friends we don’t have a revenue problem, we have a BIG spending problem-

The Arkansas Primary is just under a month away on May 18th. We have tons of folks (candidates) running around getting their message out of what THEY promise to do if elected. My thought is what will they NOT do if elected? Will they NOT raise taxes? Will they NOT spend more than we take in? Will they NOT put my children and theirs in further economic bondage?
Here is a simple way to tell if those running for office will commit to fiscal responsibility and limited government- ask them if they have signed the American’s for Prosperity’s NO CLIMATE TAX PLEDGE?

There is a link on that page that will give you the opportunity to put your candidates and the already-elected officials on record saying they “oppose any legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue.”

Staying Involved Post-Parties and Post-Trainings

American Majority asked the question “Now What?” after the 2009 tea parties, and again following this year’s tea parties through our website AfterTheTeaParty.com.  The question often arises at trainings as well- people wonder how involved our activists remain, how our candidates fare in the elections, what our college students trained through Campus Majority go on to accomplish.

A great story from here in Kansas is a woman named Julanne.  Julanne attended one of our political activist trainings in May of last year following the April tea parties.  At the training, we discussed the fundamentals of building effective coalitions, organizing events, holding government accountable, communicating your views, and volunteering in campaigns.   I was excited to receive an email from Julanne a few weeks ago, letting me know that she was applying all those skills together in an upcoming event.

On April 24, Julanne will help to host a meeting called “Wake Up America” with local speakers from grassroots and tea party groups and both current elected officials and candidates campaigning for the people’s vote in this year’s election.  Following the event, there will be a full hour of questions, networking and connecting with individuals within the community.  Individuals who attend the meeting will meet and have the opportunity to build coalitions with other liberty-minded individuals, hold government accountable by communicating with their existing elected officials, get involved in the campaigns of any candidates they may agree with, and more.

American Majority isn’t about rallies or pep talks, though both have their purpose.  We exist to train individuals like Julanne, to give people the education, tools and resources they need to go back to their own communities, and to make a difference for liberty.

From Talking to Walking

Okay the rally is over, the signs are put away and now what?  Now is the time we separate the talk from the walk.  Each time I share with a group of people I ask this question:

What are you personally willing to invest today to ensure freedom and liberty tomorrow?

Here in Arkansas we have a primary on May18th. Start by finding out what is on your ballot. Each county clerk office has available a sample ballot, it is vital that voters are armed with knowledge before they enter the voting booth.

Once you have taken the time to preview the ballot, get the word out. Make others in your community aware of what they will be voting on. You may have a tax increase or a special election in addition to candidate races. If there is a tax increase or special election find out the details.

Here are some practical ways YOU can get information out helping others become informed, engaged and empowered:

  • Connect online using social media tools like facebook and twitter- American Majority has some awesome tutorials to help or attend one of our trainings. (see below)
  • LIP (local is power) Keep it local. Find people in your area that share your concerns, take turns going to public meetings such as city council, school board and quorum court; take notes, collaborate and get the information out.
  • Write letters to the editor of your local paper. Make sure you use facts, address local issues and keep ranting to a minimum
  • Find candidates who reflect your beliefs, donate your time, money and energy to their campaigns- be sure and vet them properly.
  • Join a local coalition of like-minded people. Ask us we know of organizations across the state. You will need a support group, the bigger your pool of people the less work that falls on anyone individual
  • And finally define your efforts to limited government, fiscal responsibility and free markets. This is not about republicans, democrats or any other party, this is about Americans.

Wanted: Media Savvy Tea Party Leaders

We are living in some very interesting times in the Sooner State. 

This past week several Tea Party leaders within Oklahoma were spotlighted by the national media.  Consequently, a few very unflattering stories were run both locally and nationally regarding the Tea Party movement within our state because of comments made by these leaders.  These stories and comments not only created divides amongst organizations, but they have also tarnished the Tea Party movement as a whole as well.

What is disappointing, however, is that all of these controversies could have all been very easily avoided by following a few basic principles in dealing with the media.

In Oklahoma, as is the case around the country, local Tea Party leaders are for the most part very new to the world of politics.  Not only have they never led an organic political movement, most have never dealt with the professional media in this or any capacity.  They are completely green and completely unaware of how the media game is played – especially within the scope of mainstream media outlets. 

This lack of media experience is exactly why print and television journalists are looking to these new leaders for quotes, comments, and to be the basis for stories about the Tea Party movement.  It is no accident or coincidence that professional reporters with years of experience are continually calling on these leaders for interviews or for their perspectives on stories they are contstructing. 

Furthermore, reporters who are hunting for a story or attempting to frame a narrative surely know they can manipulate Tea Party leaders into making outrageous claims and giving controversial quotes.  It is like a NBA franchise playing a junior high JV squad in a basketball game – inexperienced and outmatched Tea Party leaders have no chance if the experienced media member is attempting to play the media game of driving a narrative or exploiting a hot-button issue to benefit their story.

Unfortunately this is exactly what happened this week in Oklahoma.

So what are Tea Party leaders to do?  Avoid the media altogether?  Only speak to “friendly” media outlets?  Or simply barrel ahead with no worry about long term affects of continued media blunders?

At American Majority we train candidates on how to deal with the press in the interview setting.  Needless to say Tea Party leaders would do well to learn a few of these lessons as well.

For example, what folks who rarely deal with the media must first realize is this: Reporters are always looking for a story.  Simply put, Tea Party leaders should do their best not give them one. 

If a reporter calls or shows up and begins asking questions regarding a potentially controversial issue such as militias, abortion, or illegal immigration, a Tea Party leader would be smart to graciously say that their organization is not concerned with such things and avoid making any comment on those subjects altogether. 

It is always much better to actively avoid a controversy rather than unknowingly embrace one.

Secondly, all grassroots leaders must dress as professionally as possible if doing a television appearance or print interview.  No one should make the mistake of walking into an interview setting simply wearing a t-shirt and jeans or other inappropriate attire.  This not only reflects well on the interviewee as a person, but it also makes the interviewer take them more seriously in what they have to say.  Folks being interviewed must give credibility to themselves and their organizations if they want to sustain the momentum of this movement.

And lastly, new folks within the world of politics always need to prepare beforehand for any interview they undertake.  A few simple things to do would be to practice by going through mock interviews, thoroughly study talking points, and mentally prepare to respond well to accusations, attacks, or loaded questions.  These simple preparation tools only take a few minutes but they will reap benefits far down the line.

If grassroots leaders want to make a lasting and long-term impact, they would do well to learn these very easy lessons and avoid the mistakes that are currently being made by others in how they deal with the media scrutiny of being a Tea Party leader. 

Sadly, it only takes one quote or one simple misstep to begin the snowball effect of bad press.  And it cannot be stated enough that nothing brings a movement down faster than not knowing how to play the media game.

We Can’t Stay on the Sidelines Any Longer

Last night I received a “noise issue” notice citing “loud pounding.” This, evidently, is the music I listen to. And of course, as I’m reading the email describing this disturbance my head is throbbing, not from the music, but from the sound of a dog yelping at the top of it’s lungs. The dog belongs to my next-door neighbor, the one who raised the complaint.

I’ve learned two things from this experience. One, although I must admit that I have a frightening level of numbness toward loud music, I’m not in my twenties anymore and probably should act accordingly (I just turned the big 30 last week). And two, my neighbors definitely don’t enjoy my taste in music. Spoon, Phoenix and the Avett Brothers are truly great bands. Trust me, you might enjoy listening to them even a bit louder than normal every once and a while also.

Now that they have made the first move, will I complain about the noise their dog has made since I moved into my apartment over five month ago? Probably not.  I’m too nice, I like dogs; I tell myself it’s probably a lovely dog – just lonely. Will I turn down my music? Yep, already have my earphones in. Is there a problem with this situation? You bet.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that I am doing exactly what Conservatives have been doing politically. When applying this situation to our current political dialog we as conservatives often find ourselves in a similar environment. We act “a little too nice” – we don’t stick up for ourselves and often let the other side get away with most anything. Now I certainly don’t mean that we should revert to belittling behavior or name-calling, our “movement” needs none of that and should call out anyone who might be promoting such destructive behavior.

However, we MUST hold others accountable for their actions, plain and simple. Sensationalist comments as the ones made yesterday on the House Floor have no place whatsoever in our political dialog.

How do conservatives stop this supposed labeling attempt by the other side? We stay focused on the principles that made this country great. We use the words of the other side as pure motivation to get our message out that principled leadership is something this country desperately needs at every level of government. And most importantly, we attend a Tax Day Rally tomorrow and take a moment and sign up for one of our Post-Party Summits or request an American Majority Candidate or Activist Training near you.

Our country needs you now more than ever and we at American Majority want to equip you with the tools to make certain that we can turn our message into results and prove the other side wrong once and for all.

Tea Parties and Taking Back our Nation

It’s nearly tea party time again and lately I’ve been thinking about all the changes that the tea party movement has seen in the past year of its existence.  There’s one moment that particularly stands out in my mind.

My hometown of Salina, KS held a tea party on a grassy hill on April 15th where I saw my friend Heidi.  When I finished talking and stepped down, she was waiting for me with a question: “Can this really make a difference?”  Heidi identified at the beginning of the movement something that many individuals have yet to realize one year in- that while protesting is meaningful and rallies are important, that real change begins only when the sign-waving turns into implementing.

In the past year since the April 15th tea parties, I’ve personally met more than one thousand people who are asking the same question that Heidi asked- how do we make a difference?  People like Jeff in Pennsylvania who drove through a wall of traffic after work one Thursday night to attend an activist training that barely had him home before midnight; or like Julles in Nebraska who drove four hours on a Saturday morning to attend a grassroots organizing training, because that was the nearest one.  Both organized the tea parties in their communities; both realized they needed to do something more than protest.

So nearly one year after the tea parties first swept through the nation, I finally know the answer to Heidi’s question.  This past year has seen legislative victories through tenth amendment sovereignty resolutions that many tea party groups have championed; it’s seen national strides in the pushback, delay and moderation of health control legislation that tampers with our basic freedoms; it stunned pundits and political scholars when a candidate backed by tea party groups across the nation dared to take back the people’s seat in Massachusetts.

All that didn’t happen just because of protests and rallies, though they played a key role.  It happened because average people with jobs, families and mortgages chose to engage in the unglamorous task of taking back our nation: organizing in their community, carpooling to the state legislature, testifying in committees, writing their elected officials, and talking to their friends and neighbors about the importance of standing up for liberty.  So here’s your answer Heidi: yes, we really can make a difference.  If we choose to do the hard work, to implement the freedom we rally for, then we’ll keep looking back as we near the one-year point and know that we made a difference.  And then we’ll look ahead to 2010 and we’ll know: the best is yet to come.

What Are You Doing for Liberty?

In 1852, Wendel Phillips wrote that, “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” These words are true of any government but I believe they are a special reminder in our republic.

For many years (exactly how long is a question for another day), a significant majority of our country, and conservatives specifically, have been asleep at the wheel. We have not been vigilant and the result has been a progressive resurgence resulting in a contraction of our liberty.

In America it seems that we have a very short attention span. After all, if a deliberate, enemy attack on one of our largest cities couldn’t keep our attention for more than a few years, so how can we hope that the spectre of progressivism will be a winning issue at the ballot box?

I’ve heard a lot of talk over the last few months with people asking whether our current situation is a tipping point which will lead to America’s finest hour or an inevitable end to the great experiment our founders undertook. For myself, I believe that this question is yet to be answered. Unchecked, the progressive forces now in play will move forward with their end goal of fundamentally changing the purpose of our government. However, with the right organization and training it is possible for the conservative American majority to make a decisive stand on the principles which have made our nation great.

At American Majority we understand the realities of elections and realize that it is the people who win those elections that are going to make public policy. If we want to have a hand in those decisions then we must start winning. The trainings that we conduct across the country work toward outfitting conservatives so that they can maximize their impact on the electoral process.

Later this month we are going to host a series of Post Party Summits, designed to empower and equip conservatives as we move into the heat of this year’s election cycle. These gatherings are going to be held in seven states over a three week period of time. Unleashed

Next month, American Majority, one of America’s premiere organizations for conservative activist training will do something unprecedented. It will unleash 30 citizen activists from more than 20 states to begin training in their local regions.

For years, the left has dominated in the area of citizen involvement, but American Majority is fighting back. No, Arianna Huffington, they are not encouraging violence. Conservatives have somehow been duped into believing that our only course of action against the socialist takeover of our country is to vote every two years. As was stated very clearly in Pennsylvania last August, a sleeping giant has been awakened. This fire was ignited with the Tea Parties, continued with the Town Halls and is spreading daily as our elected officials consistently choose to ignore us.

So Americans are awake, now what? That is where American Majority comes in. Although rallies and protests have been vital to this great awakening, they will not in themselves turn this country around. We have a lot of ground to make up and a very short time to do it. American Majority is dedicated to equipping conservative soldiers with the weapons (not real weapons) that they need to succeed. This arsenal includes knowledge of American history, social media skills, campaigning techniques and coalition building.

I am excited to begin training for American Majority here in Missouri in the very near future. My plan is to conduct these trainings frequently in the surrounding areas, so please watch the calendar and encourage friends and family to attend. Of course, all trainings will be announced here.

Health Care and Getting Engaged Locally

I grew up wanting to be a doctor just like my dad.  My science scores soon put that dream to rest and I chose politics as a second calling, but for about five years, I worked at his office.  My dad has practiced for 25 years in a Kansas town of about 600 with no traffic lights and some of the best people you could hope to know.  So it should come as no surprise that when Congress passed the monstrous health control legislation Sunday, it started my week on a sour note. The legislation increases costs and government interference with private practices like my dad’s, levies higher taxes on businesses that employ our friends and neighbors, and takes away the individual freedom to choose one’s own health care.

This week has seen many impassioned debates about the legislation around the nation- yet here in Kansas, we debated the same issue with much less publicity.  SCR 5032 was defeated twice this week in our Kansas legislature.  The bill would have placed a constitutional amendment on the ballot for the people’s vote on whether to reject the restrictions the national government put upon our liberties through the health control bill.  Some of the local tea party groups sent ambassadors to talk with their state legislators about the bill; yet, not surprisingly, local and state media offered little coverage of the legislation, and many citizens didn’t even know that the bill was being considered.

We at American Majority often say that change begins at the state and local level, and we encourage individuals to work for the national change they seek through their own communities.  This is a perfect example.

But we the people have another opportunity to make our voices heard- after all, November is coming and it is an election year.  Kansans can start by clicking here to find out how their legislator voted on the bill.  For a list of email addresses for each legislator, Smart Girl Politics has put together this Google database.  A government of the people, for the people, by the people depends upon the people contacting their elected representatives and holding them accountable to be responsive.  When that fails, often the best way to hold someone accountable is to get involved in their opponent’s campaign.

I’ve had a bad week.  The arrogance of a Congress who voted against the majority of Americans, despite the calls, letters and protests, was startling to see.  Founding Father Samuel Adams knew this day would come and gave firm instructions: “If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.”  This week, we face new dangers from a government which knows no bounds and threats to liberty which know no end.  Now is the time to translate that anxiety over the direction of our country, the anger towards the lack of responsive representation, and the passion for our sacred liberty into action.  Get involved today by attending a Candidate Training or Activist Training.  Learn to make the most of your time, energy and efforts at the Post Party Summits.    Game on, friends.  We have seven months until November.

Summit Speakers Announced

While it has been a very trying past few days, we at American Majority are hopeful. We see the courage and resolve coming from the grassroots and know that America’s finest days are still ahead. We have the numbers, we have the passion, what we need is the training. That is why we put together the Post Party Summits. These regional trainings will be unlike anything you have seen before. We are bringing in some of the best grassroots activists from around the country, people who know how to win because they are doing it.

We just announced names like Erick Erickson of RedState.com and comedian turned activist Steven Crowder. We have lined up some amazing women in S.E. Cupp, well-known author and political commentator and Dana Loesch, conservative talk radio host, tea party activist, and all around power mom. The list goes on. In addition to excellent speakers, we are working to bring you sought after trainers and guest lecturers, to ensure that this movement has the tools needed to implement freedom, not just talk about it.

We hope you will take a look at the Post Party Summits and consider attending one near you. We have worked hard building an itinerary that is beyond anything seen in this movement so far; but most importantly, this will be an event that brings together activists from entire regions. Our hope is that you will leave with connections, strategies, and the know-how to take back your communities, one-by-one.

Health care was only the beginning for us, not the end. I am reminded, and encouraged, by the words of Thomas Jefferson:

Educate and inform the whole mass of the people…They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty..As our enemies have found we can reason like men, so now let us show them we can fight like men also.

Had Enough Yet?

Last night’s vote to strap the American people with trillions of dollars of more debt, circumvent our freedoms and enslave our children is very likely the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back. I see this usurpation as a chance for Americans across this nation to lay down their lives of mediocrity and take up the relevant and vital cause of freedom. It is an opportunity to have our children and grandchildren witness first-hand the greatness of the American spirit and the ideals that have made this country like no other on the face of the planet. What an example we can become to our future generations!

If we, the citizens who dearly love this nation, chose to accept the mission that has now been clearly laid at our doors, we can be the Paul Reveres, Thomas Jeffersons and George Washingtons of the next century. We can only achieve this together by stepping out of our comfort zones, turning off our television sets, laying off our hobbies for a while, and forgoing some sleep and luxuries of life to become students of this nation we cherish so much.

This will not be a fun battle, or a quick one, but given the course of history it is a crucial one. It will take time from our families and from our comfortable lives. But we will be able to stand before our children and our Maker and say “I did everything I knew to do to defend and protect the freedoms and liberties of the “Land of the free and home of the brave.” Ronald Reagan rightly said “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men actually were free.”

A Unique Event: Why Everyone Should Take Note

Standing outside in the cold for several hours is an uncommon occurrence and yes, even in Minnesota, most would consider this to be a bit crazy. When asked by friends in warmer climates how do you handle the cold, my response is pretty simple – we just stay out of it. It is no wonder then when folks like myself, who are directionally challenged and have yet to figure out the skyway system in downtown Minneapolis, take to the streets on a winter day and often catch glimpses of strange looks from faces looking down upon you.

Minnesotans love to take advantage of these skyway systems or underground tunnels and heated parking garages. They have an uncanny knowledge of how to play just about every board game on the market and often model their homes around one single feature, a fireplace. Warmth is extremely valued in this state and people should take notice when
Minnesotans go against this reasoning and elect to bear the harsh winds and cold to attend an outdoor event during a Minnesota winter.

Such an occurrence took place last Saturday, March 13, when thousands of individuals (not hundreds) lined the steps and surrounding area of the Capitol in St. Paul to attend a “Kill the Bill” rally. The exact number attending nor the title of the event is as important as is the fact that few have witnessed a crowd of this proportion in recent memory gathering to address an issue of such substance: The future of our nation’s health care. What is so noteworthy about this event is that the individuals attending weren’t organized by one overarching group, they don’t belong to a particular political party and could have been doing so many other things on a weekend, yet they decided to show up in the cold. The voices heard weren’t voices of anger in so much as they were voices of concern. The crowds in St. Paul and throughout the country over the weekend will undoubtedly continue to gather should they remain largely ignored by our political leaders. It is now our job to make certain that our elected officials remain accountable for their actions.

Much like this group in St. Paul, most of the staff at American Majority has witnessed passionate people across the country uniting for the cause of limited government, often braving the elements to stand up for what is right. While I don’t expect you to battle a harsh Minnesota winter, I do hope you won’t let their efforts go in vain. It will take all of us, working together, to turn this country around.
