Remembering Lincoln: Would a beard improve the prospects of these presidential hopefuls?

April 14, 2015

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) Monday, on the heels of former First Lady Hillary Clinton’s announcement Sunday she’s running for president, announced he’s running for president — the latest in a line of hopefuls already causing division among liberals and conservatives alike.

Looking through all the social-media posts on constituents’ dissatisfaction over the early announcers got those of us at American Majority wondering … perhaps resurrecting a piece of advice a young woman once gave President Abraham Lincoln (shot in Ford’s Theatre 150 years ago today) would make the prospective commanders-in-chief more appealing — say, by taking the advice given to Lincoln and growing some facial hair?

“I have got 4 brothers and part of them will vote for you any way and if you let your whiskers grow I will try and get the rest of them to vote for you you would look a great deal better for your face is so thin. All the ladies like whiskers and they would tease their husbands to vote for you and then you would be President,” an 11-year-old Grace Bedell wrote Lincoln in a letter dated Oct. 19, 1860.

None rock the whiskers quite as well as our beloved sixteenth president — nor have a story quite so poignant as the then-presidential hopeful taking to heart the words of an 11-year-old from Westfield, New York — but they could all certainly learn from President Lincoln as 2016 approaches.
