Don’t Let Hillary Set the Standard for Transparency

April 2, 2015

With news coming out this week that Hillary Clinton has deleted the emails from her private server, we have another reminder of how the political elite don’t want transparency and yet transparency is a bedrock of our constitutional republic. As Patrick Henry said, “The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them.”

Here at American Majority, we want to equip you with the tools to hold your elected officials accountable and ensure transparency. It is critical that you understand how to use the laws available to you. Here are three steps to demand transparency from your elected officials:

1) Find new information: Use your state’s Open Records Laws or the federal Freedom of Information to request publicly available information from meetings and government correspondence. Don’t rely on the media to tell you what you need to know.

2) Summarize your information: Determine what you have found and its relevance to the current issues. Then concisely summarize what is new and compelling before doing step three.

3) Share the information: Use social media, friendly bloggers, talk radio, and even the mainstream media to get the information out. Remember to look for what is newsworthy and what is likely to be ignored.

With these tips you can increase transparency in your community and shine a light on government operations.
