Saying that the youth are valuable has become a mantra, but it rings true. Our country’s youth are valuable not just based on their future potential, but also what they are capable of now. It’s this belief in the power of young people that brought about American Majority’s Youth Grassroots Trainings.

The Youth Grassroots Trainings (YGTs) engage teenagers. This training is a fast-paced way for teens to learn how their government affects them and how they can impact their government. Since the first YGT in September 2013, American Majority has conducted 17 YGTs throughout Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota, reaching over 440 students.

During these trainings, teenagers learn about the political system, the nature of government, and and how they can best relate to their government. Trainings include a healthy dose of history with the Founding Fathers’ perspective on how to form a government. They discover effective ways to support political candidates that they agree with and how to communicate with officials who are already in office.

This knowledge gives them the understanding of how to impact their government, but that is only half of the equation. Just knowing how isn’t enough; they need to have a conviction to do so. Young men and women are learning why their values are important to their nation. The end goal of the training is to motivate teenagers to take their conservative values to heart and then act on them with practical steps that actually make a difference in their communities.

Micah Pearce, a former homeschooled student, and current college student, developed and leads the YGTs and draws upon his experiences in making an impact in Wisconsin by recruiting and training volunteers in Sheboygan County during the 2012 fall elections. During this work, Micah realized the potential of young men and women to make a difference and champion their values.
