City Mayor Plans to Broadcast Bird Chirping

Recently, a city mayor declared that he wanted to broadcast “bird songs” on the streets of his city. The rationale? Bird chirping makes people happy.

Never mind the fact that I personally think bird chirping is the most annoying sound on the planet, I nonetheless stopped to wonder, is this really what our cities should be worrying about?

Right now in Kansas, city council and school board candidates are ramping up their campaigns for our April elections, and we’re getting ready to hold our third candidate training specifically for them. Sometimes I get questions about why the local level is important- and it’s stories like these that illustrate why.

There are a few key questions any elected official should ask themselves when faced with a proposal, such as broadcasting bird chirping:

First: Is this something we have the authority to do? I strongly believe in federalism, the notion that local entities can make better decisions than federal entities, but that still doesn’t authorize local governments to legislate outside of their jurisdiction. In this case though, I would say, sure, there’s nothing in the state or national constitution that expressly forbids the city of Lancaster, CA from broadcasting bird chirping. It might ruffle a few feathers (sorry, I had to go there), but it’s not directly unconstitutional.

Second: Is this something that we should do? Meaning, will the benefits this entails outweigh the costs to do it. I couldn’t find any estimates of what it would cost the city to erect speakers from which to broadcast the bird song, but I can’t imagine that the benefits could outweigh the cost. Which brings to point, what are the benefits? According to the mayor, increasing the people’s happiness. How interesting. Our Declaration of Independence says that one of our inalienable rights is the pursuit of happiness - that means that I get to choose what my happiness is, and how to pursue it. It does not mean that government is responsible for giving me happiness.

Third: Is this something we can do best? Often times governments take on ideas or projects that a private entity could do better. I have to think that if this bird-brained scheme were really a bright idea, wouldn’t private charities and enterprises take it up?

Several months ago, I wrote about Bell, California, where the city manager was making nearly double the salary of President Obama, and the council members were also making off with salaries of $100,000 per year. While both this story, and the story of the bird-chirping mayoral proposal take place in California, I can’t help but think that this problem isn’t localized to that state only. We all ought to be monitoring our local governments to know what they’re doing and how they’re representing us.

Kansans Speak on Charter Schools

Interesting story on Kansas Watchdog regarding current laws in Kansas and what voters think of charter school restrictions.

The report cited in the article mentioned three states which earned strong A’s (the District of Columbia, Minnesota and California) share these five characteristics:

  1. Set charter schools aside in creation and oversight from the conventional system.
  2. Ensure that the same amount of money allotted for one child’s education in a state follows that child to the school of choice — entirely.
  3. Permit distinct, independent entities to open schools and hold them accountable for both growing charter schools that are great and closing those that are not.
  4. Educate children well and add value every year to the learning they receive.
  5. Do not require adherence to the same failed layers of oversight and bureaucracy that have hindered progress in our conventional public schools.

Also interesting in the article was a survey conducted asking Kansas voters how much they thought government is spending per pupil on education- only 10 percent of respondents were correct.

Grassroots and the Beltway

Today at RedState, Erick Erickson has a great post about the battle to limit earmarks and pork spending from Washington.  Most recently? Roads, bridges and interchanges should be exempted from the earmark moratorium, high-ranking officials protest.  It’s a great reminder that advocating for limited government must continue to be top-of-mind for all of us as we go into the holiday season.  It can be hard to make time for much of anything during the busy days leading up to Christmas, but it’s important to keep reminding those inside the beltway of the opinions of the grassroots.

Government Continues to Grow during Lame Duck Season

Nestled between Thanksgiving and Christmas, as we all revel in the season and work on getting things handled at the office so that we can spend some time with family and friends in just 20 short days, our Senators in DC are hard at work making sure that they can toast to new taxes on New Year’s.

What am I talking about?  It’s hard to know, isn’t it, with so many opportunities being discussed to raise our taxes- The Food Modernization and Safety Act (S510).  This act will tax food producers in the midst of an on-going recession, and will give our federal government new, unprecedented power over this industry- both foreign and here at home.

So how does it work?  The act requires that food sold within the US must be inspected by an FDA inspector- and they plan to hire 5,000 new employees in the next two years in order to do this.  That’s right, as you and I are still tightening our belts, and employers across the nation are struggling to keep their existing employees paid, our federal government wants to increase its own size even more.

Of course, there will be new streams of revenue created by this bill… now that all food must be inspected by the FDA, the farmer/seller will be charged a fee.  Expect your food costs to increase as the growers/sellers must pass on that new, added expense.

Wait! It gets better.

Suppose that same grower who will be paying these new fines just to be able to continue their job has one instance of food poisoning. In the event of a recall, the new fees put the cost of that recall directly on the grower. This one instance of food poisoning (which, if you follow food news, you know food poisoning can crop up just about anywhere), could easily put the farmer out of business, as they have to deal with a possible nationwide recall, investigations, public notifications and of course the loss of revenue.

Meanwhile, these 5,000 new employees will be regulating foreign imports into the US as well. In order for foreign food companies to export to the US, they must first be inspected by their own government (provided its standards are deemed strict enough by, who else, our government), or they must be inspected by our new 5,000 inspectors. In the summary provided by congressional staff, it says this regarding this legislation’s power: “Directs the Secretary to develop a comprehensive plan to expand the technical, scientific, and regulatory capacity of foreign governments and food industries from which foods are exported to the United States.”

A legislator who I worked for several years ago told me that the first rule of legislating is this: Do no harm. He said the second rule is  similarly simple: If the problem can be solved outside of government, take no measures to correct it. This law is a rather brilliant example of what happens when legislators fail to follow either of the two rules.

Currently, the Senate has passed the bill, and it is resting in the House, where it is being held up by representatives who are concerned about its house of origin.

You see, our constitution states clearly that any revenue-raising bill, such as this one, must originate in the House, then go to the Senate. So those Senators of ours? Either they failed to read the bill and don’t know that it’s raising revenue, or they know and they ignored the constitution. Luckily for those of us who think that government should be limited in size and scope, this scuffle will likely slow the bill down- though it may still be pushed through in a few weeks.

Thanks to Nathan Unruh for the background research.

Living in Flyover Country

I visited a close friend last weekend and sat next to a Chicago native on my flight back into Kansas City.  A sweet older gentleman, he asked, “What’s it like living in Kansas?”  I answered that it’s great if you like small towns, and that while I know it lacks the mountains of Colorado and the beaches of California, I have never wanted to live anywhere else.  Because the best people in the world live here in “flyover country.”

The phrase, “flyover country” was of course coined by a “coaster” who can’t imagine why anyone would choose a life of wheatfields and combines.  But you know, every big movement got its start here, in flyover country.

The abolition movement.  Women’s right to vote.  Prohibition.  Populism.  And more recently, the New Leaders Project.

Over at the Washington Times, there’s a great editorial written about the movement by local, area grass roots tea party leaders to identify new candidates for local office- everything from city council and school board to county commission and state legislator.  At dinner with an admittedly liberal friend Monday night, I told her about this new initiative that we were partnering with local leaders on, and she looked at me with eyes wide and said, “You’re training an army.”

Yep.  That’s the plan.

An army of solid, strong conservative leaders who care about their communities, their state and their nation; who understand the constitution and value it still today.  These new candidates, identified by the local tea party leader and backed by the members of those groups, will not only work to return our government to its proper size and scope, but also will be held accountable, by those very tea party activists who worked to identify them in the first place.  As the editorial states, “Efforts like those of American Majority, local Tea Party campaigns and citizen-led ballot initiatives are what’s needed to limit government power, town by town and state by state.”

It’s a novel idea- and it’s one that could change the nation.  And where did it begin?  As the Washington Times points out, in the heartland.  That’s right- here in flyover country.

What You Know Matters

My colleagues have posted recently about the importance of the upcoming city council and school board elections; here in Kansas, we’ll be voting on those local individuals representing us in April and now is the time to start thinking about solid, conservative candidates who can carry the people’s voices.

Changing the world starts in our own backyard, and I firmly believe that one of the most important things that you can do tackle your own backyard.  To understand the issues that you’re facing, what your city council, school board, or county commission is doing can take a lot of time to research though.  Often the news media fails to cover their actions in any real depth, and that can leave a true information void that damages our ability to hold our elected representatives accountable, whether for a job well done, or for a vote cast poorly.

Here in Kansas, though, we have a new, unique tool to help us.  We always say at American Majority that we give away so much because we believe that knowledge is power, and we want to take the power out of the hands of the elite, the bureaucracy, and place it in the hands of the people.   A great partner in this effort is the Kansas Policy Institute, which is daily conducting research and monitoring issues within our state.  And this week, they’re giving all of us an entirely new, free tool to help us hold government accountable.

It’s called KansasOpenGov.org and on the site, you can easily find such information as the state checkbook, school districts revenue and spending per pupil (including a comparison tool, where you can see how your district ranks against others in the state), state pay and benefits for employees, state union and non-union employee contracts, even detailed property tax information listed by county, so you can see exactly what your area looks like against other like areas in the state.

What’s the value of all this?  If knowledge is power, then easily-obtained knowledge is worth gold.  In my time at American Majority, I have spent countless hours searching for information which was previously very difficult to find, compile and understand- now, I can easily and quickly access it online, see it broken down and analyzed for me as well as have access to the raw data.

Check it out.  Know what’s happening in your backyard.  And let’s get actively involved in changing the game in our own communities- whether it’s holding your school board accountable for their spending, standing up to a county commission that wants to increase your taxes, or stepping up to put your name on the ballot for city council or school board.  Ronald Reagan once said that all great change in America begins at the dinner table.  He was right.  And today, all great change begins in our own backyard.

The Election Is Already Here

I was reminded today of an important truth: policy is enacted by those who win politically.  Who wins politically?  The ones who do the work.

Look, I know it’s not glamorous, making phone calls asking your neighbors to get out and vote.  And I know that as enjoyable as I find it, most people do not enjoy going door-to-door.  On election day, you might have other things to do than help bring voters in to the polls, or watch to make sure that ballots are counted correctly.

We must do it anyway.

And by we, I mean all of us.  The days of sitting out, making excuses as to why we’re too busy to get involved?  Those days are over.  There is no time.

The election is happening, right now.  Three days ago, I mailed in my advance ballot.  I already voted.  If you reached me today with a message about your candidate, you would be too late.  Across America, voters are walking into courthouses and election offices to vote early in-person.  Yes we have much work to do between now and November 2nd- but we must start now.  Because the election is already here and it is already happening.

In eleven days, a message will be sent.  Will it be that the tea party is astroturf after all?  That we were involved in the primaries but sat out the general because our chosen son or daughter didn’t make it through the primary?

Or will it be that we the people demand the government of our founders, ruled by law, governed by the constitution, based upon the laws of nature and of nature’s God?

That message, my friends, is up to you.  This is a rare opportunity.  You can not only shape an election- you can change a nation.

While many of the great friends who I have met at trainings throughout my state and around the nation are very actively involved in shaping the outcome of this election, it is my great regret that many are not.  Here are the excuses I hear most commonly:

-I’m too busy, I am working a lot of hours.  My dad works 14 hour days at the private practice he owns, where he commonly drops what he’s doing (ahem, my thirteenth birthday party) to take care of a patient who needs him.  He is an elder in our church, where he regularly meets with couples and families in need of help and reconciliation.  He bales hay, feeds cattle and mends fence on the family farm where I was raised.  And oh yeah, he has 10 kids at home to care for, discipline, educate.  Know what he spent last Saturday doing?  Walking door-to-door for a local candidate who he can’t even vote for.  If my dad can make time to volunteer for a liberty-minded candidate, anyone can.

-I have to take care of my kids.  Know why I’m involved in politics today?  Because I’ve been walking door-to-door with my dad since I was three years old.  Your children need to see you involved.  They need to know that being involved in elections and the political world is necessary to secure our freedom.  And your children’s future rests on you getting involved, right now.  So ask your mom to watch the baby while you take your older kids walking with you; bring your kids with you when you make phone calls encouraging people to vote.  I vividly remember walking door-to-door with my dad, asking voters to cast their vote for my candidate.  It shaped me into who I am today.

-Not this year but maybe next year.  What are you waiting for?  If the obscene spending and relentless government takeover of our rights and freedoms doesn’t get you off the couch and into the real world, what will?  Are you waiting for 2012?  Because whether we’re successful in restoring limited government in 2012 depends wholly upon our success in 2010.  There is no time to wait.

The election is already here.  It is happening, in people’s homes as they fill out their advance ballots, and in courthouses and election offices as voters cast their ballots early.  The importance of our involvement will only increase in these next eleven days.  Across this country, thousands of hardworking and dedicated activists are making phone calls, distributing yard signs, going door-to-door, and learning how to be good poll watchers to help ensure that this election is about restoring freedom and liberty to America.  Are you one of them?

Notes from the Summit

As we were pleased to do last year, American Majority is providing in-depth training at the Smart Girl Politics 2010 Summit in DC this weekend, and I wanted to share some notes from it with you.

Yesterday, we held five training sessions, with Anita MonCrief and Faulkner Strategies joining us at the Summit- we started off teaching attendees about the system, how the progressive movement has systematically implemented reforms that have created the flawed system we currently face- and perhaps most importantly, how to break it.  Do you want to the learn the same things?  You can view that presentation on our website.

Then we explained how precincts work, why they are important, and how to work your precinct for a candidate you believe in for this upcoming election- or how to target precincts within your district to lead to victory if you’re the candidate yourself.  This is one of the most important presentations for conservative activists to know and understand, as the key to governing is first winning politically.  You can also view this presentation online to better understand precincts yourself.

Anita MonCrief taught attendees how to identify voter fraud- and what to do once they find it.  I broke out some notes from Anita’s stellar presentation in my blog post a few weeks ago.  Understanding legal voter registration, voter fraud and what to do about these issues is going to be of supreme importance to liberty-minded citizens in every election from the very local level, all the way up.

Our good friends at Faulkner Strategies joined us for a session on running for office, titled “Deciding to Run.”  A strong presentation focusing on the different dynamics and decisions that women candidates will be faced with, I saw lots of ink pens flying across note pages during this training session.  I don’t have a copy of Faulkner Strategies’ specific presentation, but we do have one of our “running for office” training presentations online that you can check out.  I am loving the field of strong conservative women who are taking back their communities and running for office this year- let’s keep this momentum growing and keep turning out solid candidates next year as well.

Finally, we spent some time training on the importance of engaging hearts and minds online through Facebook, Twitter, blogging, wiki projects and more.  You can view one of our new media presentations online, where you’ll learn about the history of communication and persuasion that we inherited from our founding fathers, why engaging online is so important, and then step-by-step instruction on how to do so.  New to the process?  Want detailed instruction on how to take your online engagement to the next level?  Download our Twitter or Facebook guides on our website and we’ll walk you through it.

Whether you were able to join us for the Smart Girl Summit 2010 or whether you were at home working hard for a candidate you believe in, or maybe just welcoming in the start of the fall season, we believe that knowledge is power.  So arm yourself, equip yourself, and let’s keep pushing on.

Why Constitution Day Still Matters, 223 Years Later

Why celebrate Constitution Day?

On September 17, 1787, our founders, the members of the Constitutional Convention, adopted our Constitution as the governing document for our brand new country.  Faced with overwhelming odds against this country they fought for succeeding and thriving, they outlined a blueprint to “enable the government to control the governed, and in the next place, oblige it to control itself” (Alexander Hamilton, 1788).

Where are we today?  We see videos of members of Congress forthrightly admitting that they don’t know what the Constitution says, or care about how it applies to legislation they are voting on, while we listen to a recorded voicemail of a member of Congress asking a lobbyist for money based upon her position and perceived clout.  Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House responds to the question of where in the Constitution the government is given the right to mandate health care with “Are you serious? Are you serious?”

It’s easy to think that our Constitution doesn’t matter; indeed, it is what those in power would have you believe.  Here is why our Constitution still matters-

For the first time in history, power was granted on the basis of the consent of the governed.  Not based upon your family name, your noble title, or your aristocratic bloodline.

For the first time in history, allowances were made for government to be altered and changed by the people, through the process of amending the Constitution.

For the first time in history, a country was founded on the premise that government has a purpose, and it is founded by “We the People.”

Now more than ever, it is important to recognize the significance of our Constitution, and to realize how readily and importantly it applies to our daily lives.  Take a moment today and read through our Constitution.  Listen to our national president Ned Ryun’s podcast series on the constitutional convention and the process through which our Constitution was written, signed and finally ratified.  Because now, perhaps more than ever before, our Constitution matters.
