Power Corrupts…Again

In the wake of Speaker Pelosi’s declaration that she has successfully “drained the swamp” despite two high-profile flaps, Dallas Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has found herself in bit of a pickle recently as it’s been discovered that she’s been doling out scholarship money to family members and close associates’ children like it was candy on Halloween.

Apparently, as the Dallas Morning News has reported, last year Johnson had awarded 8 scholarships from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation to her grandsons and the children of a top aide, bringing the tally of her nepotistic generosity to a grand total of 23 awards since 2005 that have been in violation of the Foundation’s eligibility rules (15 of which went directly to family members or employee’s children).

The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday that over the last five years, the Dallas Democrat has awarded up to $20,000 in 15 scholarships to two grandsons, two great-nephews, and aide Rod Givens’ children between 2005 and 2008. The 2009 awards – reflected in a previously undisclosed list provided Monday by the foundation – push that above $25,000. – DMN

EBJ’s defense, while in sort of a rambling prose, basically said this:  I’m proud of my service.  I’m surrounded by Republicans.   I help everybody.  It was unintentional.  I didn’t know.  I will make it right.  (Congresswoman Johnson has said that she will repay the funds by the end of the week) – I remain unconvinced.

Other news suggests that Congresswoman Johnson could find herself embroiled in a House ethics investigation examining her actions in regard to anti-nepotism rules.  However, the Dallas Morning News reports that it might be “politically dicey” for the House ethics committee to investigate another member of the CBC while having both Reps. Charlie Rangel and Maxine Waters face hearings in the fall.  So goes politics…

Another day, another ethics quandary for longtime serving members of congress…  Sadly, this comes as no surprise to the majority of us.  We’ve become accustomed to our political leaders (especially those who have been in the game for awhile) having a slight case of the “Whoops!  Looks like I’ve been unintentionally funneling money and favors to family, friends, buddies, and back-scratchers” and then apologizing and going on about their business.

What I find most interesting and perhaps telling is the relationship between tenure, influence, and corruption.  It seems, while this is not always the case, that the longer a politician is in power and the more influence they gain the more apt they are to become entangled in ethical quandaries.  Now we could get into several reasons why this happens, but I believe that the simple statement “power corrupts” is explanation enough.

Reps. Johnson, Waters, and Rangel have between them 68 years in Congress, countless appointments to committees and sub-committees, and dozens of chairmanships.  At some point each of them stopped serving the people, and began serving themselves – and that’s the problem.  Currently we have a system that rewards and further entrenches self-interested politicians.  The same politician who once ran for election promising to fix the problem has become the problem, and sadly it’s our fault.  We have not been engaged enough in the nomination process, nor have we been active participants holding our elected officials accountable.

That changes now.  The surest way to limit congressional corruption is to limit the time they are there to do the damage.

Keep Good Records

In politics there are several sayings that are tossed around as good advice.  Whether it is, “always stay on message” or “don’t be the first to go negative” (the former is sound, the latter may be up for debate) there are few that are essential to political success.  One of them is:

If it isn’t in a database, it doesn’t exist.

Working in politics, either as a campaign operative or grassroots organizer, soon becomes all about lists, lists, and yet more lists… being able to manage all this information becomes an essential part of the operation as your list/network/database is the primary means of contacting, understanding, messaging to, and mobilizing your assets.

Therefore, simple and effective information management is a skill quickly developed… or you fail and die.

Whether you’re running a campaign or are engaged in the type of grassroots electioneering discussed by my colleague from Kansas, I always tell people, “Your two greatest sources of political capital are 1) your reputation and 2) your network.”  Put these together and you come to the conclusion that even if you have the most expansive and involved network of people and assets connected to you, but no way to effectively access them, your network becomes useless.

Your ability to access your network is key, so in the most simple of terms:  you must keep good records.  In an effort to discuss the basics of political information management without writing an exhaustive manual, here are a few simple, common sense tips I’ve picked up along the way as I’ve built and managed lists:

  • Define your list’s purpose – Like anything else, set goals.  When setting up a new list, have a clear understanding of what you want it to do (and build it to suit your needs).  Is it a donor list?  Is it a volunteer list?  Is it a precinct voter turnout list? Is it a master list?
  • Determine what the key data points are at the beginning – After laying out your list’s purpose, be sure to identify the most important fields of information you want to keep track of.  Ideally you want to set this thing up and run with it.  You don’t want to have to go back later to add or change data fields, complicating and possibly compromising the full potential of your list.  Decide what information you absolutely need for the list, determine what info would be nice to have, and then prioritize and develop the data fields.  Think ahead and think strategically.
  • Make it work for you – Build your database/spreadsheet/list to fit the Data, not the other way around.  Keep it user friendly.  Use a program or software that isn’t overly complex.  If this is a political list, chances are you won’t be the only person editing or adding to the list, so use something that lots of folks are comfortable with (like Excel).
  • Use common sense – Properly name fields and have a standard procedure for updating data.  One of the most common list mishaps is making ambiguous data fields that are populated incorrectly or inconsistently.  A simple example would be using the “Address” field to capture all location data: street, city, state, and zip.  By doing this you not only limit your ability to segment and sort your list by specific data like ‘state’, but you also set yourself up for mail-merge nightmares when you find the “Address” data is inconsistent and looks bad or you can’t target specific areas for specific messages.
  • Structure it so that it’s searchable – Following on the last point… You want a list that you are able to search, segment, target, compartmentalize, slice, dice, and serve on a sushi platter by different data points.  Maybe that last part is a little too much, but you get the idea: the value and ability of your list is greatly increased by the ability to target specific points of interest.
  • Keep it clean – As with anything else, you want to keep your list organized.  Keep an eye out for redundancies and regularly tidy up/scrub your list.  Also, if you ever have a request to be taken off a certain list, make sure you follow up with the request… nothing worse for building a positive relationship than for the other party to feel bombarded.

Remember, in politics, your lists are some of your most potent and effective tools.  You’d be wise to keep those tools in working order.   You’re only as influential as your network, so you want to ensure your ability to properly access, utilize, and leverage it for your purposes.

Strategy: The 1st step toward winning

At American Majority have a maxim that applies very nicely to conservative grassroots leaders and candidates alike:

People with bad ideas and proper organization will always beat good ideas with poor organization.

For example, in every training I give, I allude to the fact that for too long conservatives (especially those at the grassroots level – candidate and activist alike) have relied too heavily on the virtues of their ideas and principles at the expense of effective organization and strategy.  The result is the same time after time: the right principles, those of limited government, spending restraint, liberty and the free market are summarily defeated at the hands of the opposition’s well-oiled political machine.  The opposition’s machine succeeds not because the principles of big-government, higher taxes and government control are better than those championed by conservatives, it wins because it has a plan founded in sound strategy, employed with effective tactics, and executed with efficient organization.  They win because they plan, and they plan to win.

I don’t mean to insist that ideas and principles don’t matter; on the contrary they are of absolute importance.  Without a solid commitment to and understanding of what you are fighting for, you have already lost.  But entering the fray of the political maelstrom armed only with the belief that your cause is just will not yield victory.  You must, as the above maxim instructs, organize.

However, we need to take it further.  Organization is not enough.  Organization is pointless without the direction dictated by a plan to achieve a specific goal.  Above all, you need a strategy that drives tactics and organization to results.

Think of it this way: What good is a highly trained, well disciplined army going to be in battle without a battle plan or strategy?  Remember, without a plan, there are no effective or efficient actions, thus no favorable results.

Strategy is key.  A successful political campaign hinges on a properly developed and executed strategy.

Strategy begins with goals, vision and self-awareness.  Essentially your strategy is how you will marshal available resources in the current environment to maximize impact and return in favor of your desired outcome.  To do this, you must not only take account of what abilities, connections, money, and networks you have access to (ie: your strengths), but also which of these you lack and what liabilities exist (your weaknesses).

Next, you must assess the current political climate (both locally and nationally) and the players and issues involved.  These aspects make each political campaign unique and different than all others.  Too often does an “expert” political consultant/strategist try to fit their clients/candidates into a pre-fabricated “Campaign Plan” and expect a win.  A “no assembly required” or “pop-out-of-the-box” campaign plan is not a strategy.  A strategy should be custom built around a campaign, the campaign should not be made to fit the parameters of a predetermined strategy.

Once you have established the “here” (current context) and the “there” (endgame goal) for your campaign, you begin to build the “path” (campaign plan/strategy).

Generally your strategy should address the following:

  1. What is the message and how will you frame the overall debate?
  2. What are the method, timing, and delivery of the message?
  3. What should the sequence of events be to maximize results?
  4. How will you use resources to persuade and eventually mobilize supporters?
  5. Are there any strategic opportunities that need to be exploited/pitfalls to avoid?

Once a strategy is established (and written down), effective organization and execution is essential.

Everything you do should be geared toward mobilizing more of your supporters to the polls than your opponent, but it begins with your strategy.

“You can’t put a price tag on the American Dream. That dream is the heart and soul of America;
it’s the promise that keeps our nation forever good and generous, a model and hope to the world.”

President Ronald Reagan, October 22, 1986

“Nobody does it better!”

Well really, nobody else really comes close.  American Majority is in the unique position of being the premiere non-profit, non-partisan, conservative political training institute in the United States that offers what we offer; and, if I might go ahead and toot American Majority’s horn a bit, I’d contend we are the best at what we do: training conservatives to win.

So rather than take some time to pontificate on a platitude (as we tend to do sometimes on this blog), I would like to share some of the recent feedback we’ve been getting from folks in the field (and brag a bit too).

New Mexico State House candidate Tonia Harris has this to say:

Grassroots Leader Therese Cooper plans to become an implementer of freedom:

Former US Congressman Bill Redmond fully endorses American Majority’s “Precinct Power” strategy and wishes American Majority were around when he was running for congress!

New Mexico Conservative Summit Organizer Linda Merrell of Albuquerque, NM says:

I’ve attended seminars and trainings by the dozens, here and around the country.  When I told these people that no one does it better than American Majority, I meant it, and I have the experience to back up what I said.  I can’t thank you enough for coming here and sharing your knowledge with our New Mexico activists.

Seriously folks, I’d hate to sound conceited, but here at American Majority we’re for real about teaching conservatives to win!  Our political trainings, whether it’s for grassroots leaders or candidates vying for political office, are top-notch and cutting edge.

If you’re interested in bringing American Majority to your community, feel free to request a training!

Also, please take advantage of all the free resources we offer on our website under the Resources section.
